Took me 4+ years of living here to finally visit the Getty Center (mostly bc classical art bores Lori lol) but we made a trip to see the new Lumens exhibit. Such an architecturally beautiful place full of little vignettes. It won’t take me nearly as long to make another trip.
Kea Portrait, 2023

In December of last year, this Kea (NZ’s endangered alpine parrot) landed on our car roof while my upper half was stuffed into the back seat switching lenses. We’d pulled over at a quiet watering hole area in the Milford Valley where they were known to hang out. Sure enough, we only had to wait a couple minutes before one showed up.
They’re naturally very curious birds and for better or worse, acclimatized to humans. Aotearoa has done an amazing job w their preservation efforts but these birds live in such a specific habitat that regular contact with eco-tourists was always going to be an issue. There are actually several signs at pullouts and campgrounds warning about keas’ love for tearing up windshield wipers and door seals.
Luckily we had no such issues. I had just enough time to switch the lens and fire off two photo bursts before the kea took off. Probably realized quickly we weren’t going to feed it. The encounter was as brief as it was magical, a real bright spot in a month full of indelible memories.

Back Back Again, 2024

Heading back to Korea and Japan for a bit. Good reason to dump some photos that have been sitting on my hard drive for quite a while. Naha, Okinawa; Bukchon & Insadong, Seoul; Bukhansan in these photos. My focus has been on video/film this year though and I made the difficult choice to just leave my photo cam behind this time, forcing myself to think and observe a bit differently. Watched Wim Wenders “Tokyo-ga” and “Perfect Days” a couple times this year so I’m carrying those around with me. My only 50mm lens is shit though, so apologies to both him and Yasujiro Ozu, it’ll be a different view.

Tongariro, After All, 2023

Had a few setbacks for about 24 straight hours, culminating with the cancellation of our alpine crossing in Tongariro yesterday due to weather conditions. Decided to replace it with a 17km hike to the Tama Lakes despite poor visibility and drizzle but ended up being so incredibly lucky with the fickle weather. We’ve got so much to share from this one hike alone, including waterfall stuff and a lone seagull meeting us at the summit to hang out. That’s Mount Ruapehu in the distance, an active volcano in the Taupo Volcanic Field.

Two nights ago I learned that “wh” makes an “f” sound in Māori, so this place is pronounced Toe-far-anooey, as far as I know. Aside from the bird sanctuary there was a really nice surf break and coastal formations we didn’t have time to fully explore. I imagine that’ll be a recurring theme, but grateful regardless.
