My parents instilled in us the belief that the pursuit of happiness in our work is the ultimate victory in life.
Amidst my nomadic journey over the past year, I've been fortunate to find temporary homes with relatives and kindred spirits, who've generously provided me with support, food, and shelter. I often wonder how I can repay these kind souls who believed in me when I couldn't even believe in myself. My only currency is gratitude. Whenever I promised to repay them by a hundredfold, they would simply say, "Don't worry, just pay it forward."
"Ani" is a symbol of home and abundance, paying tribute to my mother, Edelhany "Annie" Laxa Martinez. She is the centerpiece of the mural, A poignant memory of her carrying a “Bilao” coming home from our nearby market. The homes who embraced me as I was braving a new world, filled the void and loneliness I felt in my time away from home with the same love and care my own parents would have shown.
This artwork is a representation of migrant workers who sought for a better life for their families, embodying each and every family who welcomed me with open arms in the United States.
