Internationally famous singer Jimmy Cliff plays Ivanhoe Martin, a poor young man who arrives from the countryside to Kingston with big dreams to become a famous singer. Ivanhoe unfortunately learns that the entire Jamaican music industry is controlled by the scrupulous music producer Mr. Hilton (Bob Charlton), who pays his singers pretty much nothing for their music. Disheartened, Ivanhoe instead gets himself into the illegal ganja trade and gains infamy after killing a policeman.
