Swiss artist
@uwewittwerstudio (born in 1954, lives and works in Zurich) presents Avant que le verre ne cède, his first solo exhibition in French-speaking Switzerland, at
@jenischmuseedartdevevey . Curated by Marie Gaitzsch and Margaux Farron, the exhibition features monumental works and smaller ones, mainly watercolours, alongside charcoal drawings and oil paintings, and highlights several of the artist’s most emblematic series.
Visitors will discover Wittwer’s artistic evolution from the late 1990s to the present day, through a selection of works that explores the recurring themes of his practice: the relationship to history, however painful it may be; to memory, whether collective or personal; and to the dreamlike, however deeply rooted in reality it may be.
The exhibition features iconic series by the Swiss painter, such as the “Im Walde” (“In the Woods”) series, large-format watercolors depicting faint silhouettes set against a sparse forest backdrop. This forest is representative of many of Uwe Wittver’s works, where figurative or even iconic scenes contrast with entire areas of the painting that are erased, like fragments of memory fading with time.
Uwe’s painting often serves to remind us that truth and memory are constantly being destroyed and reconstructed, and that the history that reaches us is not always the one that is told to us, or painted. Beneath their refined surfaces, his works often carry a quiet tension — between beauty and unease, clarity and fragility, between truth and representation.
