Way to go, Cavs!
Spent this past Saturday at UVA Wise celebrating a wonderful group of graduates! Congratulations to the Class of 2026, and already can’t wait for my next visit.
Leaders, innovators and community members from across the region will gather on Thursday, May 21, 2026, for the annual SWVA Economic Forum at the UVA Wise. This year’s event will feature a special appearance by Governor Abigail D. Spanberger, who will share insights on strengthening Virginia’s economy and supporting communities across the Commonwealth.
This year’s theme, “Rooted & Rising,” highlights the region’s commitment to honoring its deep community foundations while advancing forward-looking economic growth.

Congratulations to Lucy Cunliffe, a senior mathematics major with a concentration in data science and a minor in exercise science at UVA Wise, who has been named the 2026 recipient of the Chancellor’s Medal for Excellence in Undergraduate Research.
Recognized for her research in mathematics, Cunliffe presented her work at a national conference and explored complex concepts related to shape analysis, building on her studies in data science and applied mathematics.
An international student from England, Cunliffe is also a member of the UVA Wise tennis team and plans to pursue graduate studies in mathematics, with the goal of becoming a professor and researcher.
Congratulations, Lucy!

What started in one classroom during a series of snow days has grown into @lunchbox276 , a nonprofit now serving children across Southwest Virginia.
In 2015, UVA Wise alumna Mary Beth Masters ’88 and others in the community came together around a shared concern students who depended on school meals suddenly without them. What followed was an immediate hands-on response shopping carts filled to the brim, mile long receipts at checkout and volunteers working together to pack and distribute food across the county. UVA Wise students, athletic teams and campus organizations continue to regularly volunteer, helping pack bags and support the program’s ongoing mission.
What began as a short term solution quickly revealed a deeper need. Today Lunchbox276 continues that same mission making sure students across the region do not go without.

Earlier today, @uvawisesga hosted its annual transition meeting, officially swearing in newly elected executive board members and senators. The event included senior gifts, meaningful reflections and messages of encouragement for the year ahead.
