14.6.–8.9.2024 Taidevaltakunta ’24 -biennaali Hämeenlinnan taidemuseo (In English in the comments) IN/VISIBILITY-teossarjassa on 117 muunsukupuolisten omakuvaa. Potretit ovat kuvissa esiintyvien henkilöiden itse kuvaamia. Ne on tehty valokuvastudiossa kaukolaukaisinta käyttäen. Tavoitteena on ollut antaa osallistujille mahdollisimman paljon päätäntävaltaa siihen, miten heidät esitetään. Teossarja pyrkii kohti tulevaisuutta, jossa muunsukupuolisuudet tunnistetaan ehdoitta. Keskeistä on taiteilijan ja osallistujien yhteistyö sekä kuvissa esiintyvien henkilöiden itsemääräämisoikeus ja luova työskentely. Kokonaisuus on yhteisteos, jossa valta jakaantuu, eikä keskity ainoastaan taiteilijalle.   Kiitos kaikille osallistujille! ✨ 01001110 01001100, A&S, Aamu, Aarni Juoksa, Aarni Riitasointu, Aava, Aava E., Afanasjeffin Darjan Marian Marjuškan Papus, Alba, alice, Ami, Anni, Ano, Ansku, Aro Valtteri Mielonen, Atu, Auri, C., Bambi Lehtonen, DN, E, Eli Teeo, Ellen, Emel Tuupainen, Esteri Lovisa, Ez Swan, Fe Simeoni, Fiona, Frank, FRDZ, Halla, harakka, Heli, Heli O, Helli, Helmi, Helmi Aletta, Humppa K. My article entitled ”Imagining utopian futures in the present using nonbinary self-portraiture” has been published in Continuum: Journal of Media & Culture Studies’ special issue The Future of Nonbinary edited by CQ Quinan and Claude Kempen. Link in bio ABSTRACT Cisnormativity renders nonbinary people invisible and unimaginable. This article introduces how I utilize practice-based artistic research to address this invisibility. In the project, 117 nonbinary participants created studio self-portrait photographs in collaboration with me, and each selected one portrait to be part of the photographic series entitled ‘IN/VISIBILITY’. The objective was to create a utopian space in the studio where nonbinary genders are recognized unconditionally and to produce portraits on the participants’ terms. This article provides an overview of the project, including its consideration of the critiques of trans visibility tactics and the underlying utopian aspirations that inspire it. I suggest that, when employed mindfully, trans visibility strategies can be a valuable tool for nonbinary community building. The research project is supported by @koneensaatio #nonbinary #selfportraiture #utopia #transvisibility #artisticresearch

Surveillance As Care: Utu-Tuuli Jussila On Exhibiting At PhMuseum Days A security camera archive becomes an unexpected meeting ground between the artist and her grandmother, portrayed during the final years of her autonomous life with Alzheimer’s disease. Exhibited in Bologna through the PhMuseum Days 2024 Open Call, the curation of @ututuuli 's Härmä/Hoar aims at creating the conditions for visitors to dissect, discover, and feel these photographs – which weren’t intended to ever be looked at. The act of seeing and being seen is made explicit, and questioned at their core: who is watching who, and to what extent are we allowed to look? With the PhMuseum Days 2026 Photography Festival Open Call now open for submissions, offering more artists the opportunity to exhibit this October, we caught up with Utu-Tuuli Jussila to delve into the story of this archive, and in the experience of showing it in Bologna. #phmuseum #phmuseumdays #ututuulijussila

✨We present 𝑯ä𝒓𝒎ä / 𝑯𝒐𝒂𝒓 by 𝐔𝐭𝐮-𝐓𝐮𝐮𝐥𝐢 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐚 (b. Finland), one of 13 projects selected from over 1,600 submissions to our Call for Exhibitions 2026. ✩ @ututuuli ’s practice engages with found images and collaborative photographic methods, exploring themes such as surveillance, death, gender diversity, and the politics of visibility. About Härmä / Hoar, they wrote: “My grandmother lived to be 94 years old. She wished to live the last years of her life alone in her home in Ylihärmä in South Ostrobothnia, Finland, kilometers away from the nearest town. She had early-stage Alzheimer’s disease, which is why she occasionally imagined that strangers visited the yard or the basement. A motion-sensing surveillance camera was installed to ensure that the intruders would be detected. Eventually, the camera ended up monitoring my grandmother instead. The surveillance camera images form the material for this series. In them, my grandmother does repetitive yard work in the twilight of her life until she no longer appears in the pictures. The yard, however, is not emptied, but life after human presence continues. I received the images from my father after my grandmother had already passed away. There are over ten thousand images, and I've selected the ones that best tell her story. The sequences highlight the rituals of her everyday life. Sometimes, the automatic camera accidentally creates otherworldly colours. One day my grandmother suddenly turns into a bird.” ✨We look forward to presenting Utu-Tuuli Jussila work in Kranj. ✩Jury Open Call 2026: ▪ Francesca Hummler @fransangle ▪ Jelena Janković @bitefzena ▪ Emmanuelle Halkin @emmanuelle_halkin ▪ Tereza Kozinc @tereza_kozinc ▪ Fernanda Prado Verčič @pradofernanda

A6, 72 sivua, omakustanne Julkaisu on saatavilla Similar Ground -ryhmänäyttelyssä Lou gallerialla @lougalleria Aukioloajat Pe 24.10. Klo 15-20 La 25.10. Klo 12-18 Su 26.10. Klo 12-16 Hinta 3-7€ (varallisuuden mukaan) Maksu MobilePay:lla Taidetta ja tutkimusta yhdistävää väitöskirjaprojektiani tukee Koneen säätiö. @koneensaatio …………………. sukupuoli kivääri (2025) is a collection of words and phrases that AI misheard. I conducted interviews as part of my PhD research project. My research topics are nonbinary self-portraits and the utopias and norms associated with them. I’m particularly interested in questions related to the visibility and recognition of nonbinary genders. I used Microsoft Word’s AI-powered transcription feature to transcribe the interview recordings. It converts audio files into text format. During transcription, it became apparent that the AI didn’t always recognize terms related to queer and trans lives, resulting in surprising word choices. The publication is mostly in Finnish. My dissertation project, which combines art and research, is supported by the Kone Foundation. A6, 72 pages, self-published The publication is available at the Similar Ground group exhibition at Lou Gallery @lougalleria Opening hours Fri 24.10. 15-20 Sat 25.10. 12-18 Sun 26.10. 12-16 Price €3–7 (depending on your means) Payment via MobilePay

Submissions for our 4th collective book by Utu-Tuuli Jussila (@ututuuli ) Last 38 days of our Open Call. Full information and submissions through our website, link in bio! Our Open Call is for everyone! Your credentials or previous accomplishments are irrelevant. Our mission is to give a home to great images whatever the background of the artist is. That being said, we have always encouraged the newcomers. Since the beginning we try our best to spread the work of unknown & emerging (sorry to use this term…) artists! We’re interested in the dialogues that emerge when a group of images from various backgrounds start acting like pieces of a bigger organism. In what they can reveal when they find each other in a certain way. We prefer starting from the broadest group of images in order to arrive at another layer of meaning of the whole, by carefully listening to them. This is why we don’t have a specific theme. Although we are photography based, our call is open worldwide to all types of visual arts; photography, painting, illustration, sculpture, design, film stills, etc. Basically anything printable in a book. No restrictions in terms of age, accomplishments, approach… You can send images from one or more projects but note that they will still be considered individually. Winners get published in ZONE’s 4th collective book with a high quality offset print amongst visual artists from all around the world. Also, we will share our favorite works on social media throughout & after the call even if they don’t make it in the book. Artists selected for the book will also have the chance to buy as many copies as they wish at 50% off. #OPENCALL #THEZONEZINE
