Happy International Nurses Day 💙🩺
Today we're celebrating our current and past nursing students. The nurses who study with us today stand on the foundation built by those who came before them. Our alumni have gone on to lead wards, save lives, and leave a lasting mark on the people they care for.
We're so proud of all our nurses. Thank you for your commitment, your empathy, and your resilience.
To commemorate Mother’s Day and International Nursing and Midwifery Day, we’re proud to spotlight Leona McGrath and Bailey Collins - a Woppaburra and Kuku-Yalanji mother and son whose journeys are grounded in strength, care and community.
Leona began her journey at UTS in 2006, studying a Bachelor of Midwifery, which ‘at the time... was the only Sydney based university’ offering the degree. Today, she continues her studies through a Master of Indigenous Health (Research), completing later this year.
Reflecting on her career, Leona shares she ‘always wanted to be a midwife but never thought I would have the opportunity to do it…’ and is now the Manager of Aboriginal Maternal, Child, Youth and Family Health Team at NSW Health.
She credits Jumbunna for its support, saying, ‘The support Jumbunna provided me during my undergraduate degree was invaluable. I feel incredibly proud that my son in now a part of the Jumbunna community.
Inspired by his mum, Bailey followed in her footsteps at UTS and now works at Jumbunna Institute. He shares, ‘Mum (Leona) is an amazing role model in my life…’ and wanted to experience the same sense of achievement that his mother did at UTS.
And when asked what he admires most about his mother, Bailey says: ‘Mum is an incredibly inspiring and beautiful human being inside and out. The perseverance that she consistently demonstrates and provides to others is nothing short of outstanding. She is a pioneer for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people everywhere for what she was able to achieve and it makes me proud every day to say that she is my mother.’
Together, their stories speak to something greater - two generations of Indigenous excellence, walking side by side. A mother who paved the way, and a son who continues that legacy.
