The gifted Palestinian playwright and performer Alaa Shehada (@alaashehada_ ) joined the UTR Festival in 2025 to perform ‘Horse of Jenin,’ one of our favorite shows from that season. A striking monologue about childhood life under occupation, accompanied by inspired stand-up and fresh commedia dell’arte-inspired mask work, ‘Jenin’ is an absolute must-see. Shehada’s command return for a live run at New York Theatre Workshop (@nytw79 ) was unjustly denied when his access to the US was revoked. Instead, in collaboration with Playco (@playcompany ) and @55BProductions , a professionally-filmed production of Shehada’s masterful performance can be seen as part of NYTW’s In the Bricks Festival at the nearby Cinema Village (@cinemavillage ) at 22 East 12th Street. Screenings are at 2pm, 4pm, 6pm and 8pm, now through May 14.

This week on HowlRound, we're looking back at the 2026 Under the Radar Symposium. In this keynote, Daniel Alexander Jones draws evidence from the archive as an offering to our current crossroads, sharing insights about story as a means of connection and a matter of consciousness.
Check it out at the link in our bio!
Luke Murphy’s (@attic_projects ) mix of magical realism, gripping high-stakes choreography and jigsaw sets captivated UTR audiences in his breathtaking two-person dance theater work ‘Volcano’ co-presented at @stannswarehouse in 2024. Luke Murphy and his athletic ensemble are back in NYC with his newest project, ‘Scorched Earth,’ at St Ann’s playing now through April 19.
The run is completely sold out, but you can still get your fix of UTR artists in the off-season. Day-of rush tickets still remain.

We want to congratulate the incredible Jaha Koo (@jaha_koo ) for being the recipient of The International Ibsen Award 2026! This is the world’s largest theatre prize, granting NOK 2.5 million without restrictions.
This award highlights artists whose practice expands artistic and societal possibilities and reflects the complexities of the world we live in today, in the spirit of Henrik Ibsen’s legacy. Jaha Koo creates theatre rooted in compassion and kindness, transforming audiences with work that invites them to be inspired, curious, and have something to look forward to.
Under the Radar presented Jaha Koo’s extraordinary Cuckoo with @pac_nyc (January 16-18, 2025) as part of our 20th anniversary festival. We are delighted to see his artistry and vision continue to be celebrated and recognized!

We’re thrilled to announce BASE + RADAR, a new ongoing residency from Seattle’s Base and Under the Radar Festival. BASE + RADAR is designed to give artists time, space, and community to develop new work with Seattle’s most daring and vivacious laboratory for new work.
Our first resident artist will be none other than Alex Tatarsky (@tartar.biz )! Alex will spend two weeks at Base this April creating a new piece with longtime collaborators.
Come see the work-in-progress showing on April 10-11 in Seattle before its premiere at Under the Radar in 2027!
