Freedom and Fear. Earlier this spring, I joined Melanie Grant and Kayo Saito at Carpenters Workshop Gallery for a conversation on these two driving forces of our practice. I only had my coming out in my 40s. For 20 years, I explored large-scale sculpture to pottery, but the intimate scale kept calling me back. It all began with small sculptures. I soon realized I wanted them to be more than passive objects sitting in a room. Making these sculptures wearable was a way to let them be alive and give me joy as my daily companions. For me, the beauty of the AJF community is this precisely: this sense of community, a shared excitement and understanding that jewelry is not just adornment, but can be an intellectual and emotional archive, a way of exploring.
