It’s been a meaningful and energizing burn season for the BCFSC so far. Partners across Butte County are making steady progress to return good fire to the landscape, working together to increase pace and scale while caring for the long-term health of the places we call home.
One of this season’s highlights took place last October, when we had the honor of facilitating a successful broadcast burn in the Oroville foothills near the intersection of Highway 162 and Forbestown Road. This site lies less than three miles from the burn scars of the 2017 Wall Fire and the 2020 North Complex Fire—both devastating events that resulted in loss of life, hundreds of homes destroyed, and long-lasting ecological impacts across Berry Creek, Feather Falls, the East Oroville Foothills, and the Loafer Creek Recreation Area.
The project treated 175 acres of blue oak and gray pine–dominated forest that had become overly dense after years of fire exclusion. Burning was implemented by Terra Fuego Resource Foundation and made possible through funding from CAL FIRE’s WUI Wide Forest Health Program via the California Climate Investments initiative.
With fire now reintroduced, the next phase will focus on partnering with a local botanist to explore reseeding native grasses and forbs—helping rebuild soil structure, support pollinators, improve wildlife habitat, and strengthen the long-term resilience of this foothill ecosystem.
