The Graduate School is launching a new CPD for PGR supervisors at the University of South Wales. We are excited to support the UKCGE Recognised Research Supervisor Programme and Recognition Scheme, an accredited programme for PGR supervisors at all career stages, through writing and discussion workshops, and peer review sessions. Today we have heard from expert speakers Joanna Royle (University of Glasgow), Heledd Jarodz Griffiths (University of Leeds) and Chibuzo Amadi (University of South Wales). We also heard from Elaine Huntley (Graduate School Manager) and Professor Louise Bright (Pro Vice Chancellor Enterprise, Engagement and Partnerships). This is a fantastic opportunity for supervisors to gain accreditation through the process of reflective practice and it was great to see so many supervisors attend the launch event today.

Today we are at the STEAM Academy at Bridgend College for the USW Strategic Alliance Conference. We are here to celebrate the evolving collaboration between Further Education and Higher Education. Hayley Thomas, the Vice Principal of Bridgend college, introduced the conference and told us that “research belongs to us all”, and that when institutions come together, we can achieve more”. This morning, we heard from educators at Bridgend College and Coleg Gwent who shared insights from their action research, highlighting innovative practices and real-world impact in educational settings. One of the speakers, Jodie Trotman, is currently studying her PhD at USW. We also heard from USW staff members, including Graduate School Manager Dr Elaine Huntley, who discussed postgraduate research opportunities at USW, while Stuart Payne, Head of Funding in RISe, talked about how to resource and budget for research projects. This afternoon, there has been a keynote presentation from Simon Pirotte, Chief Executive and James Owen, Chief Operating Officer of Medr. For the final session of the day, Nicola Poole from USW will speak about good practice in course delivery. It has been an inspiring event where colleagues have celebrated and promoted research at all levels. Through collaborations between Higher Education and Further Education, we can help shape the future of research in Wales.

The ‘Images of Research’ from our recent Postgraduate Research Showcase 📷 This is one of our newer competition categories which offers students the opportunity to present their research in a unique and creative way by stripping away the technical language and leaving their research question exposed in a single image. This year, we received more entries than ever before. The images demonstrated the diverse research that is taking place at University of South Wales, with several of our Research and Innovation Groups being represented.

This afternoon, we had the 3MT (Three Minute Thesis) competition where students have, you guessed it, 3 minutes to discuss their research. It’s a really exciting category and our winner will be submitted to the national 3MT competition organised by VITAE. Heddiw yn y prynhawn, gawsom gystadleuaeth 3MT (Traethawd Tri Munud) lle mae myfyrwyr yn cael, fe gannoeddit chi, 3 munud i drafod eu hymchwil. Mae’n gategorïa wirioneddol gyffrous a bydd ein enillydd yn cael ei gyflwyno i’r gystadleuaeth genedlaethol 3MT a drefnir gan VITAE.

Our oral presentation competition continued today with postgraduate students from Applied Psychology; Criminology, Policing and Security, and Computing, Cyber Security, Mathematics and Informatics, in addition to Engineering and Health, Care and Wellbeing. Presentations included research exploring family approaches to domestic abuse, the building of hybrid rockets, evaluating school staff wellbeing and a review of Internet of Medical Things. It was brilliant to continue hearing about the diverse and impactful research taking place at USW. — Parhaodd ein cystadleuaeth gyflwyniadau llafar heddiw gyda myfyrwyr ôl-raddedig o Seicoleg Gymhwysol; Criminoleg, Plismona a Diogelwch, a Chyfrifiadura, Diogelwch Seiber, Mathemateg a Gwybodeg, yn ychwanegol at Beirianneg a Thriniaeth, Gofal a Lles. Roedd y cyflwyniadau’n cynnwys ymchwil sy’n archwilio dulliau teuluol i glefyd domestig, adeiladu rocynnau hybrid, gwerthuso lles staff ysgol, a thrafodaeth am Destun Meddygol yr Rhyngrwyd. Roedd yn wych parhau i glywed am yr ymchwil amrywiol a dylanwadol sy’n digwydd ym Mhrifysgol De Cymru.

Welcome to day 2 of the 2025 Postgraduate Research Showcase where we have continued to explore this year’s theme: Imposter Syndrome. This morning, we held a question and answer session on this topic: panel members included Professor Katy Holloway, Professor Brendan Cropley, Associate Professor Tim Patterson and PhD researcher Nerys Musgrove. The panel shared stories about their academic journeys: while one member started their undergraduate studies at a later stage in life, another switched their career from the industry sector to academia. They then discussed their experiences of feeling like an imposter. For Prof Katy Holloway, “the feelings of Imposter Syndrome do not really go away”: she explained that these come and go, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as you learn how to cope with these feelings and they can help keep you grounded. The panel offered valuable advice for postgraduate research students: Associate Prof Tim Patterson urged us to recognise that feelings of imposter syndrome are just feelings - they do not define us, while Prof Brendan Cropley reminded students that a PhD is a developmental journey, and that it’s important to reflect on the positive experiences too. Thanks to all our panelists and to our chair for an insightful session. Cynhelir diwrnod 2 o Ddigwyddiad Ymchwil Ôl-raddedig 2025 lle rydym yn parhau i archwilio thema eleni: Syndrom yr Impostor. Y bore yma, cynhelid sesiwn gwestiynau a atebion ar y pwnc hwn: roedd aelodau’r panel yn cynnwys y Athro Katy Holloway, yr Athro Brendan Cropley, yr Athro Cyd Tim Patterson a’r ymchwilydd PhD Nerys Musgrove. Rhannodd y panel stori am eu hymgyrchoedd academaidd: tra bo un aelod wedi dechrau eu hastudiaethau israddedig yn ddiweddarach yn eu bywyd, newidiodd un arall eu gyrfa o’r sector diwydiannol i academa. Yna trafodasant eu profiadau o deimlo fel impostor. I’r Athro Katy Holloway, “nid yw’r teimladau o Syndrom yr Impostor yn iawn yn mynd i ffwrdd”: esboniodd ei fod yn dod ac yn mynd, ond nid yw hyn yn ofnadwy, gan y byddwch yn dysgu sut i ddelio â’r teimladau hyn a gallant helpu i’ch cadw’n grwpio.
