Time for our monthly reminder post! We still see people out there mistakenly calling Steinholding by other names. We're going to repost this periodically to encourage everyone to refer to it consistently, so please share these simple and fun FAQs with your friends and family, early and often! Q: Why do you call your sport Steinholding? A: It's the most reasonable thing to call it. "Steinhoisting" is the incorrect term we see the most, probably because it sounds more masculine? But according to Oxford Dictionary, hoist, verb, means "to raise (something) by means of ropes and pulleys." Raising a stein into position is only one part of a Steinholding competition, and it takes about one second. SteinHOLDING makes more sense because lifting the stein is the easy part. Holding the stein in the proper position makes up 99.99% of the sport and the actual challenge. Q: Why do you capitalize Steinholding and make it one word? A: To help make it clear that it is a specific activity, with detailed rules. Also, we're old-school and English grammar has rules that we still like to try to follow. If you say "stein holding" then you're just talking about holding a stein, not competing in the sport of Steinholding. Just like football and foot ball, or baseball and base ball, or even hockey and hock-key aren't the same thing, neither are Steinholding and stein holding. Q: Technically, you’re holding a Masskrug, not a stein. A: That's not a question, but you're clearly very proud that you know some German words, so we'll humor you. Masskrugstemmen is also an acceptable term, but Steinholding is an American sport. It's inspired by the beer gardens and beer drinking culture of Bavaria, but it isn't an organized thing in Germany. Here in the states, USSA has been working to elevate Steinholding into an organized sporting league that people can take seriously. Plus we've heard the pronunciation of Masskrugstemmen butchered a hundred ways, so we're keeping it simple with Steinholding. What other wrong names have you seen people use for Steinholding? We have a ton of HUGE announcements starting on Monday for the 2026 season, but in the meantime we wanted to share a quick reminder: Since the USSA website first launched in 2016, we have ALWAYS included a map of every Steinholding competition that we could find! These days we have our own USSA-sanctioned competitions through the state championship tournaments, but we still include independent competitions on our Competition Map, because we want to help competitors find events near them, even if it isn't a USSA event! We make updates based on alerts and other information that we come across, but most importantly- anyone can submit a new competition event for addition to the map! We have a survey form that's open to the public and you can just go right ahead and follow the prompts, and we'll transfer the info to the map! The USSA Where To Compete Map is being updated for the 2026 season! It takes a LOT of time and effort to keep the data relatively up to date, with so many independent competitions coming and going each year. But the USSA team is working to purge the inactive events and get updated 2026 dates for all of the competiitions that are coming back for the 2026 season!
