Today was one of those moments that quietly reminds you how far you’ve come. My doctoral chair, Dr. Elise Rainer — now colleague at APU and dear friend — visited our @usi.dhr offices while in town for graduation, and it was incredibly meaningful to share this part of my journey with her. Years ago, our conversations centered around research, theory, and the pursuit of knowledge. Today, she was able to see that knowledge in motion — transformed into action, leadership, education, and impact through the work we do at USIDHR every day. Sometimes we don’t realize that the seeds planted in classrooms, late nights of study, and moments of doubt eventually become the very foundation of the lives we build. A beautiful reminder that when purpose meets perseverance, theory truly becomes practice. ✨

This is what it looks like when professionals stop relying on instinct. Most of the individuals in this room were already experienced. But like most professionals, they had never been formally trained in protocol. And that gap is not always obvious—until it is. Because in international environments, you are being read constantly. Not just by what you say, but by how you position yourself. That’s where clarity replaces guesswork. Amsterdam, July 2–3 — International Business & Diplomatic Protocol. /amsterdam

You can be highly educated—and still not be taken seriously in international environments. Not because you lack knowledge. But because you don’t fully understand how you are being perceived. In these settings, small details matter. How you enter a room. How you communicate. How you read what is happening around you. That’s not instinct. That’s training. Amsterdam, July 2–3 — International Business & Diplomatic Protocol. /amsterdam

If you think diplomatic protocol doesn’t apply to you, you’re already using it—just without knowing it. Anytime you are in a room where hierarchy exists, where perception matters, where decisions are being formed… you are operating inside that system. The difference is, most people rely on instinct. And instinct is inconsistent. Protocol replaces that with clarity. That’s what changes how you are perceived. Amsterdam, July 2–3 — International Business & Diplomatic Protocol. /amsterdam

Moments like this often look effortless from the outside. Most people assume confidence is what matters in environments like this. It’s not. What matters is understanding the structure you are operating in. The hierarchy. The expectations. The dynamics that are not explicitly stated. Without that awareness, even experienced professionals rely on instinct. And instinct is inconsistent. Protocol gives you precision. That’s the difference. Most people walk into international rooms thinking credentials will carry them. They don’t. What people notice first isn’t what you studied. It’s how you carry yourself when nothing is explained to you. That’s where most professionals feel the gap. Not in knowledge — in presence. And once you see that difference, you can’t unsee it. If you’ve ever felt like you should be taken more seriously in global spaces, that’s exactly the level we work on. Amsterdam. July 2–3. If it’s for you, you’ll know. This is not a lecture-based program. It’s a practical environment where professionals learn how to navigate real-world situations. How to receive delegates. How to position themselves in high-level interactions. How to understand what is happening in a room without needing explanation. Most people are never taught this. They learn by doing. Until they reach a level where that approach is no longer enough. That’s where this becomes relevant. Amsterdam, July 2–3 — International Business & Diplomatic Protocol. /amsterdam

“Even with years of experience, this training offered a level of structure I had never formally received.” What most people don’t realize is that protocol is rarely taught. Even at the highest levels. It’s expected to be understood. And that’s where many professionals reach a point where experience is no longer enough. They need clarity. Not more information—but a system. That’s what this work provides. Amsterdam, July 2–3 — International Business & Diplomatic Protocol. /amsterdam
