Presented by the Judy Lewis Logue AlcalĆ” Chapter of Mortar Board and the Humanities Center Entitled "Mathematics, Machines, and the Art of Being Human," Satyan devadoss, PhD, Fletcher Jones Professor of Applied Mathematics and chair of the Department of Mathematics, will speak as if he is giving his last lecture ever. Over the past century, mathematics has become increasingly valued in our world. And with the rise of AI, math has led us to an alternate 2D digital-reality, effectively making us less human. By exploring Albrecht Dürer and Salvador Dali, Burning Man and Beowulf, we move away from old encounters of math —ancient formulas, technical jargon, and painful memories— and offer a fresh perspective in redeeming our humanity. @usdmath University of San Diego Mathematics Department @usdcas University of San Diego: College of Arts and Sciences @usdmortarboard @usd.mortarboard

From the beauty and symmetry of zero to the symphony of sounds in our ocean, Drs. Hoffoss (Mathematics) and Boudrias (Environmental and Ocean Sciences) explored silence from their respective fields. Bravo to our faculty for such an inspiring dialogue on silence!

We were on the edge of our seats listening to Patrick Radden Keefe discuss his latest investigative work, "London Falling: A Mysterious Death in a Gilded City and a Family's Search for Truth." šŸ•µļøā€ā™€ļøšŸ“™ Huge thanks to David Washburn (Investigative Editor at KPBS) whose questions helped peel back the layers of Keefe's writing process—and for making sure we got a few laughs along the way!

The Center for Digital Civil Society Panel, "Teaching with AI Assistants: Opportunities and Boundaries for Student and Faculty Support," will bring together faculty from across the university to reflect on the growing presence of AI assistants in higher education and the important questions that accompany their use in teaching and student support. As generative AI tools become more integrated into academic life, the conversation around them is becoming more urgent and multifaceted. This panel is intended to create a space for thoughtful discussion about both the opportunities and the ethical tensions surrounding generative AI in educational settings. In particular, the panel will explore how AI assistants are influencing the way we teach, support students, and think about learning itself. It will also emphasize the importance of using AI as an augmentative tool rather than a substitute for human judgment, care, and connection. We hope this event will invite meaningful reflection amongst faculty across disciplines as we continue to navigate the evolving role of AI in higher education. Date: April 30, 2026 Time: 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM Location: Ideation Space (1st Floor), Belanich Engineering Center Lunch: Lunch will be provided
