Class of 2026 PhD candidate Maiya Hotchkiss has received the prestigious USC PhD Achievement Award, recognizing their outstanding academic profile. This is the second consecutive year that a doctoral candidate at the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work has received this distinction. Hotchkiss also received a F31 dissertation fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) for their project, “Inundated, in Community, and in the Loop: Complex Systems Science Approaches to Suicide Prevention Research with LGBTQ+ Young Adults Experiencing Homelessness.” Read the full story: https://bit.ly/4uLIgtU

Professor Ben Henwood and collaborative research between USC and UCLA featured in L.A. Times article on the impact of the L.A. County Fires on the homeless population. Henwood discusses the impact of encampment sweeps: “Over the longer term, it creates a kind of chronic instability that makes it extremely difficult to engage in healthcare, maintain treatment, or make progress toward housing. Homeboys Forever: The Lifetime Consequences of Gang Membership, is the new book from #USCSocialWork Professor Emeritus Avelardo Valdez, published by the University of Chicago Press. Drawing on more than two decades of longitudinal research, the book follows the lives of Mexican American men as they navigate adolescence, gang involvement, and the transition into adulthood.
