Announcing, with great gratitude - for the second year our program is a recipient of a grant from USC Good Neighbors Campaign! It’s such an amazing program and we are so happy to be a part of it, giving back to our local communities and helping Los Angeles youth navigate toward careers in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences.
Our team is excited for a great academic year! @usc_mann@uscmann_osw

Housed under the departments of Recruitment & Outreach and the Office of Organizational Success and Well-being, SCOPE aims to educate and empower high school students from underrepresented backgrounds to explore pharmacy & pharmaceutical sciences pathways. Students at USC Mann, lead our efforts as SCOPE ambassadors in our three programs: High School Outreach, SCOPE Saturday Academy, and Mentorship. We’re now at the halfway mark of Saturday Academy! This weekend our Scholars took a deeper dive into what careers in the pharmaceutical industry look like and the different educational backgrounds that are utilized.
Now that their drug’s clinical trials are complete, they began designing their product packaging. This required understanding all the most essential elements of the medication such as the instructions for usage, dose, storage instructions, active ingredients and more! In preparation for market launch they contemplated how to price their product after a mini-lecture on American insurance and formularies 💊🏥
After our Scholar’s FDA submission for their new drug, they learned about clinical trials and social determinants of health (SDOH).
To get a full understanding of clinical trials, we traveled back to time to discuss important historical context. We reviewed the Tuskegee Study, in order to highlight the importance of ethical considerations in clinical research and examine the lasting effects it had.
The session addressed challenges in recruiting diverse populations for trials and the Scholars engaged in group work analyzing SDOH in order to design a Phase 3 clinical trial proposal aimed at increasing diversity.
This past Saturday we welcomed our third annual cohort of SCOPE Scholars to Saturday Academy! We kicked off the program by introducing their new pharmaceutical drug development project which means six new pharmaceutical companies were founded: JAMEV INC, Xcut Center, Health Haven, CureNova Pharmaceutics, Zonaceks, Daisy Stars Blue. We learned about the scientific process, how to examine laboratory data, and what disease states each group will be targeting to treat. Follow our journey on taking a new molecule from benchtop to bedside!
