On May 8, 1945, Germany unconditionally surrendered. Victory in Europe Day sparked widespread celebrations and relief across Allied nations after the almost six years of World War II. As the Germans were pushed back throughout the beginning of year, the Allies moved in celebrating victories and mourning their losses. Throughout the war, the War Department had already been collecting, identifying and burying the dead in temporary cemeteries. The U.S. began to turn its thoughts to permanent cemeteries and memorialization. For the American Battle Monuments Commission, this meant returning U.S. staff to its sites in Europe and looking ahead to a World War II commemorative program. The agency’s mandate was formalized in March 1946 with an executive order from President Harry S. Truman. More than eighty years later, ABMC continues to honor nearly 93,000 WWII servicemen and women buried at its overseas cemeteries. May their memory and legacy live on. #ww2 #history #victoryineurope #onthisday #bwphotography

"Here rest in honored glory two comrades in arms" Remembering WWII U.S. Army Air Forces 2nd Lt. Jack W. Raper and 2nd Lt. Ralph W. Wright, 349th Bomber Squadron, 100th Bomber Group (Heavy) buried together at Cambridge American Cemetery. Raper and Wright fought and died together. Wright was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, and both were awarded the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. We remember their service and sacrifice every day. Cambridge American Cemetery is one of 26 ABMC cemeteries worldwide. It contains the remains of nearly 4,000 of our war dead. Over 5,000 names are recorded on the Walls of the Missing — rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified. Most died in the Battle of the Atlantic or in the strategic air bombardment of northwest Europe. #ww2 #worldwar2 #airforce #brothersinarms #history

On May 1, 1966, the ABMC dedicated the Honolulu Memorial to honor those who served and sacrifice in the Pacific during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Set within the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific - Punchbowl, the site bears the names of more than 28,000 missing. Its Courts of the Missing and mosaic maps preserve the memory of those who never came home. Today we mark the anniversary of its dedication – and renew our promise to remember the price of freedom paid across the vasrt waters of the Pacific. #honolulu #hawaii #ww2 #koreanwar #vietnamwar

Members of the 14th Parachute Logistics Infantry Regiment, French Army, visited Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery. The group traveled from Toulouse, in South West France, for an educational tour on World War I including the battles of Verdun and the Argonne Forest. The group was given a thematic tour of the cemetery on the Service of Supply (SOS) to echo the mission of the company, creating a strong link between past and present military logistics. The visit concluded with a moment of reflection at the chapel and the Wall of the Missing, followed by the flag lowering ceremony in honor of the more than 15,000 WWI American service members buried and memorialized here. #ww1 #worldwar1 #military #meuse #verdun #france

Paul Peternell was born on June 9, 1922, in Yukon, Pennsylvania. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on Dec. 5, 1942. On Dec. 9, 1944, at the age of 22, Peternell went missing while fighting on Hill 400 in the Hürtgen Forest in Germany. His name was inscribed on the Wall of the Missing at the Netherlands American Cemetery. His remains were recovered in 1981 and, upon request of his family, he was buried at an ABMC site. His final resting place is now at Ardennes American Cemetery. The toll for the Peternell family was high. Paul’s younger brother Edward went missing in the Pacific and his name is listed on the Wall of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial in Hawaii. Peternell's story is one of the new stories to be introduced at the Netherlands American Cemetery Visitor Center. The cemetery is the final resting place of more than 8,000 World War II service members and a memorial to nearly 2,000 Missing from the war. #ww2 #history #margraten #netherlands #pennsylvania

Can you name this World War I memorial cemetery? ◽ Located just outside Paris, this memorial cemetery commemorates the birthplace of American combat aviation, and serves as a symbol of the Franco-American comradeship during World War I. ◽ Dedicated in 1928, it honors the American volunteer pilots who flew with French squadrons during the Great War, and is the final resting place for some of America’s first combat aviators and their French Officers. ◽ ABMC officially assumed ownership and responsibility for the Lafayette Escadrille Memorial Cemetery, making it the 9th commemorative World War I cemetery administered by the agency. #worldwar1 #memorial #heritage #aviation #history
