This week on In Your Spare Time, Leah Schnelbach reads post 5, "Exorcists," from November 2010. In 2010, there was a conference on exorcisms in Baltimore, held by Roman Catholic bishops from the United States. Ursula had thoughts—about exorcisms, holiness, and the makeup of the Supreme Court. This week on In Your Spare Time, Omar El Akkad reads post 4, "Someone Named Delores," from October 2010. This post begins with Ursula's response to a sentence in a Zadie Smith story, then delves into issues of class and language before transforming into a beautiful appreciation of a woman Ursula knew—a woman named Delores. This week on In Your Spare Time, @adriennemareebrown reads post 3, "The Absent Silence," from October 27, 2010. Ursula went looking for a quote from José Saramago, and when she couldn't find it, began to entertain some "paranoid thoughts." It turned out she just hadn't searched the right phrase. But in the process, she wrote, "I began to consider something I’d only very vaguely known and hadn’t given much thought to: the fact that how Google gets and handles its information is an industrial secret." "I love it. But I don’t quite understand it and what Le Guin was doing with it and how it works. It’s full of very specific time and place that feels absolutely real, as if I read a book set in the 1820s and I could go there now and take a slightly run-down and overcrowded train to those locations. I don’t generally have any difficulty telling what’s set in the real world and what’s in a secondary world, because this is a thing that fiction does by register, and Malafrena is in the register of the real world, so surely that lake is there, those mountains, and the city of Krasnoy away over the plains." —Jo Walton on Malafrena, "Jo Walton’s Reading List: March 2026," at Reactor #ursulakleguin #ursulaleguin #orsinia

“The Dispossessed has matured my political views, reshaped my values, and changed my life. Reading it showed me how to confront a political landscape increasingly hostile to productive dialogue.” —Alec del Pino Gil-Casares in The Harvard Political Review (link in bio) #ursulakleguin #ursulaleguin #thedispossessed
