URCHIN SHELLFISH BOIL 2026 🦐
You’ve done it again, haven’t you? You’ve missed the first @urchinpub Shellfish Boil for 2026? You’ve gotta be quick like a whippet with this one, as this Brighton & Hove shellfish pub don’t mess around when it comes to their annual Cajun boil.
The next one is on the second May bank holiday on 25 May, and the best way to keep in the loop is to subscribe to their email newsletter. Via email, they’ll let you know the date for Boil 2’s release and how booking works. Treat it like Glastonbury and make sure you’re on time to the minute. WHAT DID I TELL YOU BEFORE ABOUT MESSING AROUND?!
We were nervous because the boil we went to last year was personality defining, so there was a lot of live up to. Expectations and energy were high, but they were fully met under the garden pergola on a warm May Day in Hove. I never want to miss a boil.
Is this the best seafood in Brighton & Hove? I say yes. Is a boil some of the best value food in Brighton & Hove? I say yes, with the whole experience coming in at £30 a head. Does this May bank holiday weekend symbolise the start of summer and my favourite time to be alive in Brighton & Hove? Yes again.

The Urchin, Hove 🦐
@urchinpub always gets my vote for the best pub kitchen in Hove. Full stop. Between its very own handcrafted @larrik.in beer and the fresh shellfish leaving the kitchen, this is the ideal spot for shellfish lovers.
From my previous posts, you’ll see I visited in the summer for the shellfish boil (subscribe to their newsletter - that’s how I found out this exclusive event was happening) and for the launch of their Sunday paellas. I was initially a little concerned by the lighting when I was looking through my videos from the other night, but I actually think it really captures how this bright pub with a gorgeous garden area transforms into a cosy, candle-lit pub with steamy windows without losing a single morsel of charm.
We started with the most flavoursome Atlantic prawns, served with a chilli crisp mayo that I could’ve eaten with a spoon (I settled for using the prawn like a little mayo shovel, which worked pretty well too). Then came clams with harissa butter, classic moules marinière and hispi cabbage with brown shrimp and miso butter. All to share between me and my partner. Obviously, we were excited about everything, but I was most surprised by the hispi cabbage - next time I’m getting one all to myself.
The menu seems so simple that I think people might look at it in advance and think that not a lot is going on. This is a grave assumption to make. The culinary detail on everything is superb, from the quality shellfish stock you know has been used in the creamy marinière to the fact that nothing needed any additional seasoning.

Back at the @urchinpub 🦐🦑
My seafood-loving family were staying with us in Hove over Christmas, so naturally I had to take them to my favourite pub kitchen, The Urchin.
We shared a mix of specials and menu classics, as always, every dish was incredible and full of flavour.
One of the specials was hash brown with a kimchi devilled egg and shrimp, it sounded so random, but it was SO good.
Will always be one of my fave places to take visitors in Brighton & Hove 🫶🏼

After more than 4 years as Head Chef at The Urchin @lukadmitryjchef is taking the next step. Luka brought us Brighton and Hove's original shellfish boil, oyster feast and wood fired paella, to name just a few, as well as a stream of top drawer specials. Was an absolute pleasure Chef. Wishing you all the best x
