Welcome to the UR Environmental Studies Program’s official social media!! We are so glad you have decided to follow us on our educational 📚 and environmental 🏕️ journeys.
As the 2024-2025 school year commences, we are proud to share some of our recent highlights 🌟. Please stay tuned for posts detailing what our incredible students and faculty have been up to over the summer and during these first few weeks of classes!
Finally, we have Emery! Emery studied abroad in Buenos Aires at the Universidad Torcuato di Tella. Take a look at her photos along with her favorite parts of going abroad in the fall! 🫧 ⛰️ 🐛
Next up is Eugenia! Eugenia studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark. Take a look at her favorite class, biggest lesson learned, and best takeaways alongside her amazing pictures! 🐻❄️🌊🧊
Next up in our Senior Series, we have Voula! Voula is double-majoring in Environmental Studies and Geography with a minor in Gender and Sexuality Studies. Her favorite place on campus is her UFA because she loves spending time with her friends and roommates there, and it’s a great spot for studying and eating! Being an ES/Geog major has been the best part of college because she “really learned a lot about [herself] that [she] didn’t know before” and has “grown as a person near wonderful people (faculty and classmates).” She wants to work in environmental justice and has gotten accepted into Columbia University to pursue an M.A in Climate and Society.
Congratulations, Voula! We can’t wait to see where you will go next! 🫂🌎
Next up in our Senior Series, we have Maddy! Maddy is an environmental studies and geography double major with a minor in data science and statistics. Her favorite experience was her trip to San Francisco for the American Association of Geographers annual conference in Detroit, where she had the opportunity to present her senior capstone research: “It was a great way to connect with other students in the geography department as well as faculty.” She says her majors have taught her the importance of “caring for those all over the world” because that’s what it means to be a global citizen. Her favorite place on campus is the Spatial Analysis Lab because she has friends who work as SAL interns, and it’s “nice to talk to professors outside of class.” She has recently committed to Duke University’s Masters in Climate and Sustainability Engineering program.
Congrats, Maddy! We’re thrilled to see what your future looks like! 🌎💓📓
Next up in our Senior Series is Anna! Anna is double-majoring in environmental studies and geography with a minor in biology. Her favorite place on campus is the red chairs by the lake. Being an ES/Geography major has “greatly improved [her] understanding of [her] local and global environment” and has also encouraged her to “think more thoughtfully about how [she] and other people build connections with natural spaces.” She understands why “building these connections is important to sustaining and improving conservation efforts.” During her time here, her favorite class was Geography 250 - Planet Earth: Wind, Water, Fire with Dr. Todd Lookingbill. She’s working just outside of Vali, Colorado Walking Mountains Science Center as a naturalist for the summer and fall seasons.
Congratulations Anna! We’re excited to see where you go next! 🗻🌎
Next up in our Senior Series is Rosalie!
Rosalie is an Environmental Studies major and Journalism minor. Her favorite class she's taken is either Dr. Smallwood's Intro to Environmental Studies, Dr. Spera's Earth, Wind, and Fire class, or an ecosystem management class she took abroad. Her favorite place on campus is the library (specifically the Lora Robins gallery). For her, "the ES community is really strong, and it's nice to have likeminded, eco-conscious people to hang out with on campus. Additionally, I love being outside and it's nice to meet friends who are the same!" After graduation, Rosalie plans to take a gap year before going to graduate school for Ecology.
Congratulations, Rosalie, we are so excited to see all that you accomplish! 🌹🌎
Next up in our Senior Series is Eliza!
Eliza is an Environmental Studies major. Her favorite class was taken abroad in Melbourne, where she learned about fire in the Australian landscape. Eliza's favorite place on campus is the Eco-corridor in a quiet little offshoot on a spring day. For her, she found "such a sweet and understanding community in my major. Being an ES student put me in touch with so many like-minded people in the field who inspire me. I also loved that it got me outdoors for class." Currently, Eliza is actively looking for work broadly in the field but is hoping to work in wetland conservation in some capacity.
Congratulations, Eliza, we are so proud of you and so excited for your future! 🍀🪷
Next up in our Senior Series is Izzy!
Izzy is an Environmental Studies major, with a minor in Anthropology. Her favorite experience was studying abroad with the School for Field Studies in Turks and Caicos: she gained really valuable experience in field ecology research while snorkeling, seeing cool marine wildlife, and meeting new friends. Her favorite place on campus is the Eco-Corridor, where she helps manage volunteer opportunities on Fridays, and helps with plantings and invasive species removal. For Izzy, "being an ES major has helped me develop a strong intersectional lens to environmental issues, allowing me to bring a more holistic perspective to research and conservation efforts." She is currently seeking opportunities to grow her impact in environmental research or nonprofit advocacy.
Congratulations, Izzy, we are so thrilled to see what you accomplish! 🪼🌲
Next up in our Senior Series is Ben!
Ben is an Environmental Studies and PPEL double major, with a concentration in Philosophy. His favorite class was Earth, Wind, and Fire with Dr. Lookingbill, and his favorite experience was the field study trip to UVA’s coastal research center through the Costal Ecology class with Dr. Boone. Ben’s favorite place on campus is the ecocorridor! Ben says that “being an ES major has allowed me to gain a deeper level of appreciation for the beauty and natural offerings of our campus through activities ranging from turtle sampling in the lake to tree identification and registration.” Ben plans on studying for the LSAT this summer (and taking it in the fall), then working as a monitor at the CARITAS homeless shelter in Richmond. Beyond that, he places to go to law school and practice as an environmental lawyer specializing in land management.
Congratulations, Ben! We are so excited to see all you accomplish! 🌊🌿
First up in our Senior Series is Abby!
Abby is a double major in Political Science and Environmental Studies. Her favorite class was Global Environmental Justice, and her favorite place on campus is the Garden of Five Lions. Abby’s favorite part about being an ES major is the community, and how it allows us to bond with our classmates. After graduation, she will be attending Georgetown University for an MA in American Government!
Congratulations, Abby! We can’t wait to see all that you accomplish! 🌱🌞
