Uproot Andy

I had the opportunity to remix Oriental Brothers International, the Nigerian highlife band formed in the 1970s who have been hugely influential both on the African continent and across the ocean in Colombia where their music forms part of the foundation of the champeta genre. The band featured guitarist G. Kabaka Opara who was also the bandleader of Kabaka International Guitar Band another giant influence on Colombian champeta, and those who have been following me long enough might remember that I also remixed Kabaka many years ago, but then it was without being asked to 😂 only for the love of the music (Mangala Special is still floating around on SoundCloud if curious). So I couldn’t pass up the chance to do it officially and I approached it with a delicate hand and gave it a proper long guitar break, un buen repique, to let it breathe and take you away. Sadly Kabaka passed last year after I started working on this remix 🙏 thank you for so many powerful emotions and especially the bursting happiness you made me feel with your music ❤️ And thanks to @orientalbrothersinternational @galletas.calientes and @palenquerecords for the opportunity and @pascalshefteshy for the mixing help y gracias a todos los picoteros en la costa colombiana por mantener los clásicos vivos. Finally releasing this edit y’all have been asking me about for a while. I made this remix in Ghana back in January 2022 to play at the @orokoradio x @surfghana event at @freedomskateparkgh which was such a vibe shout to @nicoadomako @_kikelomo_ and the crew for having me be a part of that magic. I used to play the original Sarkodie & Castro song almost 10 years ago and I loved it so much and I still do. And I really wanted to play it in Ghana so this edit was really just a way of doing that and making it a little special. ‌ Most of my remixes are like that, just a way to play a song I love but to make it fit in a different context. And I usually make them the day of a party when I feel like I need some special sauce for my set. But I actually don’t like sitting on them for this long I really love seeing all the DJs play my remixes it really fills me up.
