Painted for my friends @upperlevelgallery “Reign of Fire” group show featuring street artists from across the continent. An eclectic collection of talented was curated for the changing lunar new year 🐴, on display in Kansas City through February.
This piece is a stylized redaction of a Hippocampus within the great Fountain of Trevi. I wanted reference a historical recurrence of dominance and repression in public art spheres. It feels very much that the dark side of history is repeating, and I felt the need to create something that focuses on the moment of resistance. A lot to metaphorically blend into a horse, and I found depicting the timeless weight of stone statue could offset the contrast. Hadn’t painted this subject before…
