In the early 1970s, 6-year-old Phyllis Webstad entered the St. Joseph Mission Residential School where she was stripped of the orange shirt she was wearing and forced to wear the institutional uniform.
Today we mark orange shirt day in honour of Webstad and every Indigenous child who was taken from their families and lost to or survived the atrocities of residential schools.
It is also the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, recognizing this shameful history of residential schools, which separated more than 150,000 children from their families and communities in an attempt to erase Indigenous cultures from Canadian society, and its enduring impact on Canada’s Indigenous communities. #orangeshirtday #everychildmatters
