🎓 Celebrating Our Grads: Meet Sina Ahmadi Malayeri (CivMin MEng 2T6), who came to U of T from Azad University in Iran and is graduating this spring with an MEng in Civil Engineering and a double emphasis in ELITE and Construction Management.
▪️ What have you enjoyed most about the MEng program?
“I love the autonomy of the program, including being able to choose courses from different emphases and other departments. I really enjoyed two courses from the ELITE emphasis: Emotional Intelligence with Professor Danny Cushing and The Science and Psychology of Effective Leadership with Professor Robin Sacks. These courses helped me connect more deeply with the human side of engineering and helped me become a better version of myself.”
▪️ Were you involved in hobbies, activities or student clubs outside the classroom?
“Since my very first day at U of T, I’ve tried to get involved in as many groups as possible, which has led me to take on various advocacy and leadership roles, including serving on the UTGSU Board of Directors and contributing to multiple committees such as the GradLife Advisory Committee and ISESAC. I’ve also launched a series of events around entrepreneurship and AI. I truly encourage everyone to take advantage of every opportunity while here. U of T has some hidden gems that are absolutely worth discovering!”
▪️ What do you hope to do after graduation?
“I am really excited about my next chapter. My time at U of T helped me to discover new aspects of myself, and I’m planning to build what comes next based on that. I’m looking to move into the industry I studied and apply everything I’ve gained throughout my academic journey. Even though I’m graduating, I don’t see this as a real goodbye to U of T. I plan to stay connected and contribute as much as I can as an alum, and maybe even come back again as a student. The future is a mystery!”
Congratulations, Sina! 👏
Thinking about an MEng? There’s still time to apply for September 2026 as a domestic student — May 31 is the deadline for UTIAS, MSE, MIE and ChemE.

🔬 Professor Freeman Lan (BME) has been awarded a $250,000 grant from the Government of Canada’s New Frontiers in Research Fund to develop a rapid diagnostic workflow that could deliver results up to ten times faster than current gold-standard methods.
Antimicrobial susceptibility testing helps physicians choose the right antibiotic for a bacterial infection. But conventional tests take 16 to 24 hours, often forcing clinicians to prescribe antibiotics before knowing what will actually work. Lan’s approach aims to deliver results in one to two hours.
Following the announcement, Karim Bardeesy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry, visited Lan’s lab at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering.
Congratulations to Professor Lan! 👏

🚀 Lucas Xie (Year 3 CivMin) and Jiayu (Sunny) Shi (Year 3 MechE) are among dozens of students supported by the Paul Cadario Experiential Learning Student Awards.
Lucas worked in Professor Hamed Ibrahim’s lab analyzing climate data that could help transit authorities anticipate weather-related delays. Sunny completed a co-op with JanEco Building Maintenance in West Palm Beach and this month started her PEY Co-op with WSP in Toronto, with her sights set on a career in robotics, aerospace and AI.
The awards were established through a 2023 gift from alumnus Paul Cadario (CivE 7T3, Hon LLD 1T3). “I’m delighted to be able to help students realize their potential,” says Cadario. 👏

💙 “When financial barriers are removed, student confidence grows, grades recover and stress becomes manageable again. Students regain their momentum and continue toward the futures they’ve worked hard to build.”
As the Student and Community Wellness Coordinator, Teresa Woo sees students arrive in first year navigating mental health challenges: anxiety, depression, learning differences and trauma-related stress, to name a few. Too often, stigma and limited resources prevent them from getting help. Half of engineering students who ask for mental health financial support are turned away, leaving students to choose between care and affordability.
💬 “I see firsthand the quiet struggles students carry, not knowing supports exist or how to ask for help.”
The Skule™ Mental Health Bursary Fund helps students access therapy, medication and wellness supports without having to choose between care and cost. Right now, demand far exceeds available funding.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Thanks to the Pappas family, your donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000, removing financial hurdles, reducing stigma and giving students the support they need.

đź’Ľ From PEY Co-op to graduate research, Sara (ECE 2T5 + PEY) has been building serious expertise in signal and power integrity.
During her 12–16 month co-op at Tenstorrent, Sara worked as a Signal Integrity Intern, designing and optimizing high-speed chiplet packages for next-generation AI hardware.
This fall, she’s heading to the U of T Electric Vehicle (UTEV) Research Centre to pursue her MASc, continuing her work in signal and power integrity.

🇨🇦 A new scholarship honours an alumnus who believed Canada needed more engineers — and spent his career proving it.
Donovan Pollitt (MinE 0T4) has established the Murray H. Pollitt Engineering Leadership Scholarship in memory of his late father, Murray H. Pollitt (MechE 6T3). Murray was a mechanical engineer, mine builder, and co-founder of Toronto Stamp Inc. and other Canadian manufacturing ventures.
💬 “[Engineers are] company builders, they’re innovators, they’re all these things that the Canadian economy needs,” says Donovan.
The award goes to upper-year #UofTEngineering students with strong academics, leadership, and entrepreneurial drive, with special consideration for those building in Canadian industry.
First recipient: fall 2026.

🌱 70 years after they graduated, Paul Walters (MinE 5T6) and Ross Lawrence (GeoE 5T6, MCom 5T9) are still showing up for U of T Engineering.
The two friends met as high school students at Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute and cemented their friendship at U of T Engineering. In 1993, they co-founded the Engineering Class of 5T6 Award of Merit. It’s given each year to a student who has successfully completed first year and shows leadership beyond the classroom.
This year’s recipient is Ethan Mao (Year 2 ECE), who serves as VP Communications of the U of T Engineering Society and helped revive the First Year Chair role after it went dormant during the pandemic.
💬 “Stay connected with each other and find your legacy here,” says Lawrence.
