Congratulations to DLSPH PhD Epidemiology student Sara Ferwati on being named a 2026 Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholar.
This honor recognizes individuals for their research excellence, commitment to society and leadership potential.
“I have often been drawn to the parts of public health that are harder to see, including how systems are built, how evidence becomes useful, and how research stays connected to the people it is meant to serve,” says Ferwati. “To have that work recognized is incredibly encouraging.”

What really makes surgery safer?
According to DLSPH’s @ihpmeuoft researcher Patricia Trbovich, it’s not just individual skill, it’s how entire systems work together. By analyzing operating room “black box” data, her research is uncovering how teamwork, communication and design prevent harm.
