๐ Today is Plastic Overshoot Day.
๐ฅค What does this mean? This year, today (5th September) is the point at which the amount of plastic surpasses the world's ability to manage it effectively.
๐ง Can we fix it? Yes we can! There are real world solutions that are really working, like our reusables solution with Ocado (see pasta action shot above!).
๐ค What's next? By collaborating across the value chain within an industry, real change is possible. Our latest work on 'A 30% Reuse Future for the UK' looks at how this is possible for grocery retail in the UK. Find out more on our website!
Plastic packaging helps move food and products throughout the world, but unfortunately it comes with never-ending costs to the planet and our health. 40% of toxic single-use plastic produced today is used to make packaging, so investing in and scaling up reuse systems is key in solving the plastic pollution crisis. โ
โ
In 2024, @Unpackaged studied just how this can be done, and what the real-world benefits are, both economically and environmentally. In their study, they found that:โ
โ
๐ $ Hundreds of Millions in Savings: Reuse at scale for the UKโs grocery retail market can deliver ยฃ314m - ยฃ577m (12-22%) savings per year in end-to-end system costs.โ
โ
๐ Pollution Reduction: A 95% reduction in C02e emissions, materials and waste, for the products in scope, compared to the single-use status quo. โ
โ
๐กBut how do we know which the right products, categories, and use cases are for reuse? What infrastructure changes are needed to achieve 30% reuse market share, with a 97% return rate?โ
โ
๐ In @plasticpollutes โ latest guest blog by GoUnpackaged, we explore these questions and more when it comes to scaling reusable systems. โ
Read it via @plasticpollutes LINK IN BIO & letโs continue to shine light on plastic-free solutions. โ

๐ค We're very excited to be sharing the results of our Reuse Infrastructure Modelling work at Environmental Packaging Live 2025!
๐ The panel will give a first look at the results from our modelling work looking at the reuse infrastructure required (packaging, collection, washing, logistics) for reuse to work at scale for the UK grocery retail market.
We will cover:
๐ข An overview of the project & key value chain stakeholders supporting the work
๐ข How the model works & key assumptions made
๐ข Optimum categories to switch to reuse
๐ข The best scenarios for reuse to work and why
๐ข System impacts across key metrics - costs, emissions & waste reduction
๐ข Early stage transition planning - how might we get to the scaled reuse scenarios outlined, what is needed from government, industry & consumers
๐ If you'd like to come and don't have a ticket yet, head to the Environmental Packaging Live site and use code EPL20LIMITED for 20% off your ticket!

We're pleased to share The Refill Coalition Trials: Key Learnings for Industry report.
The Refill Coalition project successfully demonstrated that these circular concepts can excite and engage shoppers - demonstrated with maximum sales shares on a given week of 57% for in-store and 43% for online - while meaningfully reducing packaging waste and carbon footprint, without disrupting operations. The trials proved out a range of commercial, operational, customer and environmental KPIs which the Coalition is excited to share with industry to move the reuse sector forwards.
