two new scents by unknownvariable for @friendeditions , debuted at @printedmatter_artbookfairs 2026, pasadena CA. handmade in Los Angeles by one guy. the book one was a study in aged paper, spilled well whiskey, a couple marlboros inside… a few pages of a paperback and a sip before for heading back home for the night. redacted sunscreen one was based on a popular brand, quickly “tried on”at a local drugstore and then refracted into roasted coconut, some banana and vanilla. both pretty nice.

no photos of the incense (lol), but I made incense as a gift for this special dinner at @baroolosangeles with the legendary Jeong Kwan. in full jeong kwan-ish fashion, this was a almost entirely from-scratch incense, with charcoal blanks developed and sourced from Kyoto (my last batch for a while), three vintages of hand-picked and distilled vetiver oil, some karnataka sandalwood and this cypress oil I’ve been experimenting with. a nod to seunim’s commitment to respecting the land, and to baroo’s radical experimentation. very few places have inspired me in the way baroo has, so I always show up with some treats. thank you to kwang, mina and the whole family. my dms are always open if you wanna chat scents~~
At some point in the last three years I co-founded a digital arts/culture community called @fwbcollection . I’ve made a special run of incense for the community using some highly experimental techniques that I’ve borrowed from other disciplines — think wax resists, chemical etching and sous vide, for starters. The composition is a highly layered thing, the following scent notes are merely a suggestion: summer violet, smoked cypress, vetiver root and galangal. I wanted to build something rhizomatic because that’s nature’s network. :)

“What if the pho garnish plate was a fragrance?” Ran with that prompt in 2022 with @biite.club and @chef_caseyfelton . A fully natural scent where I used some trickery to coax out the sweet notes of bean sprouts, distilled my own culantro essential oil along with some very obvious hits of Thai basil, lime and more. Packaged in a 2oz Italian glass bottle with a fine mist sprayer. Sold out.

Feels weird to launch new work in the middle of ... all of this, but thankful to work w/ Montreal’s finest @saintwoods on this incense collaboration. When we started to work on this late last year, my goal was to capture some of that St. Laurent vibe and give it some Fairfax swag.

Both streets share a history of immigration, eclecticism and pure style. In LA, you can hit Bludso’s, Pink’s, Supreme and Melrose Flea. In MTL, you have Larry’s, Casa Del Popolo (shoutout GY!BE) and the best bagels on the whole goddamn planet (St. Viateur, baby). None of this would be possible without cultures that work to merge worlds. -
