Beyond the shoreline of Lake Piru, Middle Piru Creek winds through Piru Canyon on its way downstream💧
Originating in the Tehachapi Mountains within the Los Padres National Forest, the creek travels more than 50 miles and serves as the primary source of water for Lake Piru!
Piru Canyon Road is open to the public up to the Pothole Trailhead, offering beautiful views of the canyon and surrounding landscape.
Remember to remain on designated routes and respect posted closures to help protect habitat areas.

A vintage look into United's prep for the Santa Felicia Dam📽️
1. Included in the groundbreaking for the Santa Felicia Dam was its designer, legendary civil engineer Julian Hinds, who had designed and built a number of water projects for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. 📐
2. UWCD inspector Fred Gentry checks a 60-inch-diameter steel penstock 🦺
3. Testing is conducted on the Santa Felicia Dam spillway model in Piru Creek Dam site 📝
From as far back as the mid-1800s, farmers have been pumping water from private wells in the Santa Clara River valley and Oxnard plain. With these wells having to be dug by hand at first. ⛏️
Over the past century, as the wells became deeper, the water demand grew higher and overdraft began to occur. “Overdraft” occurs when more water is being taken out of the aquifers than is replaced by groundwater recharge, resulting in poor water quality, increased pump lifts, and seawater intrusion. 🌊 UWCD has constructed and operated various facilities to help address this issue over the years! 🚰

Field trip day at the Freeman Diversion! 💧
United Water welcomed students from Ventura Missionary School for a firsthand look at how the facility supports local water supply and agriculture.
Students also explored how the diversion's fish ladder helps support fish passage on their journey through the Santa Clara River 🐟
From river to recharge, it was a great opportunity to connect what students learn in the classroom to the real systems that support their communities.
It was fantastic to have students outs and connecting over the role water plays in their communities, and we hope the experience sparked a new perspective on water and its impact.

This past weekend, we had a blast at the 13th Annual Ventura County Farm Day at the Freeman Diversion! 🎉
Neighbors, families, and curious minds came out to learn how water actually makes its way from the river to your tap. Spoiler: it's a pretty cool journey. 💧
What visitors learned about
🏞️Freeman Diversion
Where it all begins. Water is diverted right here in our own backyard.
🌱Saticoy & El Rio recharge basins
Think of these as giant sponges replenishing groundwater deep below our feet.
🏔️Santa Felicia Dam
The backbone of reliable water storage for the whole region.
Events like Farm Day remind us why we do what we do. When a kid asks "where does water come from?" and we actually get to explain it...that's the good stuff. 🙌
Thanks to everyone who stopped by! 🌊🥕
We appreciate SEEAG for bringing the community together.
