Nihombashi was a small restaurant right at Berlin's Rosenthaler Platz that existed from 2017-21 until its owner literally backed the wrong horse in a betting game. It served sushi, kushiyaki skewers and other dishes that were so good they could have come from Japan. It was colourful and flashy, but by no means ‘original Japanese’, as the place was playing with an eponymous fiction. ‘Nihombashi’ is a bizarre place in Tokyo, a picturesque bridge spanned by the six-lane Metropolitan Expressway No. 6. In Berlin, Nihombashi becomes a colourful utopia, reminiscent of the 1970 World Expo in Osaka or the Italo-Japanese design group Memphis. The specially designed furniture, manufactured in Berlin, deliberately blocks the way, are too heavy and too sharp-edged. N I H O M B A S H I Reserve a table in this colouful japanese parallel universe! Designed by @unitederrors and @kyuchy back in 2016 and built with the help of a bunch of adventurous gentlemen that were soon joined to form @und.studio . Meeting the Axel and Afons, the original owners for the first time, they told us about a minimal Japanese supermarket they had in mind. White and bamboo. Well - we had expected something alike ;) So we pulled Rem Koolhaas' book about the metabolist movement out of our pocket and opened it with a big picture of the OSAKA70 world fair in Japan. Axel studied the image that looked like very colourful space stations of a forgotten future and then said. 'You know what? Do what you want!' We figured out the place had a restaurant license and within a few months NIHOMBASHI became Berlin's wildest place for sushi and teriyaki. It attracted thousands of people from all over the world, that cane just for the interior. Then it was sold. Errors of the world unite! The landing seats will soon be available in a limited edition of 222. Made from powder-coated steel, macaron cushions and solid terrazzo bases, they were initially produced along the rest of the excentric Japanese restaurant called 'Nihombashi'. 'Mabati' is a hybrid living machine. It combines bookshelf, wardrobe , paravent and lamp and might even work as a shelter in case the ceilings are suddenly lowering. The term 'Mabati' is Kiswahili and means corrugated sheet metal, the very material most slums are made up of. Instead of Kibera our Mabati lives in a spatious apartment in the centre of Berlin. While it is slowly filling up with all the resident's belongings the flat around becomes empty. "Round Table Riots" creates a set of spatial errors to provoke collective communication. A large circular obstacle fills the entire exhibition venue and must be ab/used to constitute the counter academy / library / conference that is created around.
