Trials day for the new Juliet! The glossiest Segnosaurus puppet you ever did see 🤩
The upgrades for this Juliet include…
- New coat with a change of fur, hand-cut stripes and a more sophisticated blend technique between fur and zote on the head
- New shoulder mechanism to make her arms easier to remove, and a new rotation system that uses square bar to centralise the movement and increase the longevity of the mechanism
- Moved from linkages to geared wrists for a smoother action
- New endoscope camera system with custom 3D printed cradle
- Increased range of motion in her legs so she can really REACH for those leaves!

The new Juliet the Segnosaurus is coming together! Swipe to watch her head being built, descriptions below…
1) The paint plan. Documented by @maya_kazmarski who painted our second Juliet back in 2023. Paint swatches with the colours used to create them help guide repaints and touch ups for future Juliets.
2) Paints mixed, brushes, sponges and references ready.
3) Dark base is on and the first light creamy ochre colour is applied using our favourite dino painting tool - a puckered HD roller.
4) Same technique as before but with a slightly lighter colour to create depth, followed by a third even lighter colour, this time used as a highlight to accentuate areas of interest - brows, nostrils, texture.
5 & 6) Pigmented wash - a raw sienna mix is applied to add interest and tone, building up the patina. This is used in both high and low saturation to help texture and details pop. If you slide between images you can see the scales and colour are richer in the second image.
7 & 8) Not forgetting inside the mouth - it’s always good to have vivid colour contrast for moving parts to help the whole audience see and enjoy the teeth and tongue (a toothbrush is a very appropriate tool to assist holding the mouth open while painting).
9) Eyes were actually painted over a year ago when another Juliet needed eye replacement puppet surgery due to damage so two sets were painted together. They are reverse painted acrylic domes, glued onto the base of the blink mech.
10, 11 & 12) Finished Jules! Final touches painted, fur attached, eyes fitted, scales varnished, neck attached and mechs wired up - she’s ready to leave the workshop 👋
