In the 1980s, a growing health and wellness movement began to reshape consumer expectations. With demand for organic products outpacing supply, UNFI Co‑Founder Michael Funk realized that retailers needed partners to help them respond with greater consistency and transparency. That shift set UNFI on a path to become North America’s first national distributor of natural products.

In the early 1970s, growing awareness of environmental issues began to shape how food was grown and sourced. For UNFI Co-Founder Michael Funk, supporting organic food meant helping customers meet changing expectations while encouraging more responsible farming practices.
Over time, UNFI has broadened its impact beyond farmland to include operations, energy use, transportation, and more.

I started at UNFI as an intern and joined the marketing team full-time after graduation. I loved being at the center of UNFI’s brand and helping tell our story.
Now, as the Senior Manager of Impact Engagement, I’m focused on making sure our impact work resonates and adds value for our customers, suppliers and associates. I’m learning from impact leaders across the industry, suppliers creating sustainable products, and nonprofits focused on food access and regenerative agriculture.
I’ve grown so much at UNFI, supported every step of the way, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to create value for our partners, the communities we serve, and the company that has given me so much.”

“When I heard UNFI was starting a Spanish language-learning program for operations leaders, I volunteered as a practice partner right away. As a human resources (HR) professional and a son of immigrant parents, I’ve seen the difference that including everyone in the conversation can make.
Now I’m volunteering to help leaders in our distribution centers (DCs) practice the job-related Spanish essentials they’re learning. This program is a great way to bring leaders and associates together and build stronger relationships. It’s not about becoming fluent, it’s about opening ways to communicate more clearly and making sure everyone feels seen and understood.
A lot of companies talk about inclusion, but UNFI is actually taking steps to promote it and improve overall communication for everyone. It’s really neat to be a part of that.”

“My best friend convinced me to apply for a part-time cashier job at Cub Foods when I was in high school. Now, 34 years later, I’m the Senior Director of Product Business Management and Sourcing, and there’s never been a more exciting time to be in private label.
As our industry continues to raise the bar on product standards, I’m energized by the growing opportunity to help retailers stand out and better serve their shoppers.
One of my favorite career memories is hosting retailers in our Brands+ kitchen at the Hopkins, Minn., distribution center. We showcased our team, our eight core brands, and the care that goes into every new item.
What I’m most proud of always comes back to the people. I’ve been fortunate to work alongside talented, passionate colleagues throughout my career, and they’re a big reason I’m here.”
Allison Gephart, Senior Director of Product Business Management and Sourcing
