I see that my last post was in April 2020, which is freaking me out for its significance today. It was that month, just a few weeks into lockdown when the world felt like it was being flushed down some sort of cosmic toilet, when I was out walking Bruno and I felt a sudden & inexplicable urge to run. Those who’ve known me longer will understand how unknowable the universe truly is at this shocking development. Anyway I didn’t question it, I just started running in that moment and I haven’t looked back since.
Almost three years later I’ve run on 3 continents, in snow & rain & searing heat, through muscle & joint injuries, through a broken toe, through all ups & downs. And now here I am at this major milestone. I want to dedicate my first ever half-marathon to Bruno, whose little spirit will hopefully be running with me again this morning. This one’s for you, buddy.
And away we go!!!
I haven't talked about it on social media (or at all, really) but two days before Christmas our dog, Daisy, passed away.
I raised Daisy from a tiny pup and she was my companion, comfort, and comic relief for nearly 15 years. She was with me through so many rites of passage...moving countries, career changes, failed relationships, marriage, the birth of my children. She was a constant as my life shuffled & progressed toward what it's become. My grief over her loss was paralyzing. Her absence is something we're all still getting used to, but recently it's been easier to think on her with happiness for a life well-spent together, rather than sadness over her death. Last week, we flew a beagle kite and imagined she was waving at us from heaven. Today, on Gioia's 4th birthday, she asked that I make her "a Daisy cake for the Daisy I miss," and while I had major reservations - I am not a baker & have never decorated a cake before - I knew I would find catharsis in crafting her little face with love for her, and love for my daughter. (And I'm just gonna say it, I F***ING NAILED IT.) So healing evolves. Why do I write all this now?
Because after 5 months I'm finally ready to share her passing with others who knew & loved her, and to honor the tremendous impact her life & death has had on this ole' heart.
Daisy - you were a beautiful, clever, mischievous pain in the ass and I wouldn't change a moment of our time together. Not a day goes by that I don't still look for you coming around a corner or listen for the clack of your nails on the floor. I miss you, I will always miss you, and I can't wait to see you again.
I just dropped off 3 big kitchen bags full of books & toys for donation at Gioia’s preschool. As I set them down, one of the girls’ old favorites - a stacking trio of musical ice cream trucks - started playing and I could hear the muffled tune from somewhere within one of the bags. Out of nowhere I started crying right there in the front office. How many times did we hear those first few jangly bars of “The Entertainer” and one or all of us would start singing along, or Mike and I would roll our eyes because it was the millionth time that day, or it would be playing as a soundtrack while I cooked and Mike sketched and one of the girls played. I was flooded with so many memories of seemingly insignificant small moments, and hit with the reminder that time is passing too quickly. These changes don’t always get processed in the moment, but suddenly I’m standing there letting go of a toy that gave both our daughters so much joy and it’s incredibly moving. I’m glad it will continue to be enjoyed and played with by other children over the years. Bye bye, little ice cream truck…thanks for the memories 😌 #iblametoystory
