At the edge of glacially carved Dove Lake, beneath the dramatic peaks of Cradle Mountain, sits one of Tasmania’s most photographed landmarks – the Dove Lake Boatshed.
Built in the 1940s by the rangers of Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, this humble timber shed once stored rowboats used by visitors to explore the lake. In those days, boating on Dove Lake was a popular way to experience the wilderness before walking tracks became common.
The second image is of Lake St Clair, Australia's deepest freshwater lake. You'll see both these sites on every Under Down Under tour as we stop here for lunch! This is the furthest point in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park.
