MEET THE UNDERBRUSH TEAM
Weâve noticed a lot of new followers on our socials recently, so we thought it was about time that we reintroduce ourselves! đđťđ
Underbrush Gallery has been a family-owned-and-operated business for over 40 years. Originally started by Barb and her friend Peggy in Fergus Falls, MN in 1981, the gallery moved to Fargo, ND in 1985. When Peggy retired from the business in the early 2000âs, Barbâs daughter Lisa stepped in as Underbrushâs general manager.
Located in the 25th Street Market shopping center, we proudly showcase hundreds of original artworks by many talented local, regional, and national artists. Underbrush is also home to a full-service frame shop, run by our framing manager Christa, through which we are able to provide expert custom framing services directly onsite. With their extensive backgrounds in artistic design, Lisa and Hannah are the friendly faces who assist you when you come in to place a framing order or browse our beautiful art collection! đđ¨

Underbrush Gallery is so excited to announce that May Pang, John Lennon's companion and lover during his "Lost Weekend" era, will showcase her candid photos of Lennon at a special two-day exhibition at our gallery on Tuesday, June 9th from 1:00pm to 7:00pm and Wednesday, June 10th from 1:00pm to 7:00pm! This event is free to the public, no reservation required.
â˘
MAY PANG WILL BE IN ATTENDANCE AT UNDERBRUSH GALLERY BOTH DAYS TO MEET ATTENDEES AND SHARE THE STORIES BEHIND HER AMAZING LIMITED-EDITION PHOTOGRAPHS FOR SALE OF JOHN LENNON
â˘
During the Lost Weekend, which lasted 18 months from late 1973 through 1975, Pang accompanied Lennon as he had his most artistically and commercially productive period post-Beatles. On his 1974 album "Walls and Bridges", Pang can be heard in the song â#9 Dreamâ where she whispers Johnâs name. Another song on the same album, âSurprise, Surprise (Sweet Bird of Paradox)â, was written about Pang.
â˘
Pang also encouraged Lennon to reconnect with his family and his friends, which ultimately led to a reunion with Paul McCartney and a memorable jam session between the two Beatles. Additionally, Pang arranged for Julian Lennon to visit his father for the first time in almost three years. One of Pangâs photographs of Julian Lennon graces the cover of Julianâs latest album entitled âJude".
â˘
Highlights of Pangâs photography exhibition include the only photograph that exists of John Lennon signing the contract to dissolve the Beatles, as well as one of the last known photographs of John Lennon and Paul McCartney together from March 29, 1974. Both photographs have never been available to the public until now.
â˘
Few people knew John Lennon as intimately as May Pang. Her collection of private photographs of Lennon will be on display and available for purchase at Underbrush Gallery for two days only. See John as May saw him!

Custom framing isnât just about what looks aesthetically pleasing, itâs about honoring and preserving history.
â˘
When our client brought us these postcards from her grandfatherâs time in Paris during his service in World War II, we knew they deserved to be both carefully conserved and elevated by our framing. This âTuscan Garden 2â moulding series from Fotiou helped us accomplish both for this special project.
â˘
The client granted us permission to share some of her grandfatherâs story below:
âThese postcards were brought home from Paris by Technical Sergeant Russell C. Meartz of Neenah, Wisconsin. Russell served as an engineer-gunner on a B-26 Martin Marauder bomber during World World II. By the time he visited Paris, he had already survived being shot down over Normandy and earned a Distinguished Flying Cross.
âRussell flew his first combat mission on March 23, 1944. His aircraft was a B-52 Marauder nicknamed âWabbit Twacksâ. Over the next eight months he flew sixty-five missions across France, Belgium, and Germany.
âOn June 13, 1944, one week after D-Day, his plane was shot down. It was his fortieth mission. Russell landed by parachute about a mile from German lines in the British sector of the Normandy beachhead. German soldiers shot at the crew as they descended but couldnât hit anyone. Before mailing the parachute home to his parents, he pinned a note to it: âTo whom it may concern. This chute saved my life June 13 at Douvres, France.â He was back flying combat within a month.
âAt some point during his time overseas, Russell visited Paris. These are postcards he brought home.â
â˘
Russell went on to marry his high school sweetheart Jackie, whose wedding dress was sewn from the same parachute that had brought Russell down to safety in Normandy. His A-2 bomber jacket, hand-painted with sixty-five bomb symbols representing his missions and a parachute marking his shoot-down, is now in the permanent collection of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum in Madison. The last two slides of this post feature an article on Russell taken from the museumâs âThe Bugleâ spring 2020 magazine issue.
