In Loving Memory of Melanie Ward. While we never had the chance to meet Melanie in person, we had the greatest pleasure of collaborating with her for Unconditional’s 5th issue back in 2017. We were only a couple of issues in, so you can imagine how thrilled we were when she agreed to be part of it. The story was about her and the objects she liked to surround herself with. Not only did she agree to be interviewed, but she even suggested photographing some of her favorite personal things on her iPhone (!). That interview remains one of my favorites to this day. She probably didn’t realize how much it meant to us that someone as iconic as her would take an interest in a small, independent publication like Unconditional. At the time, it was often difficult for us to get the looks we wanted and to shoot them on the girls we loved — for all the stars to align — but with her work and the way she approached fashion, she reminded us that those things were not what made a picture. Her work was so much more than that. Even through those few exchanges, the thoughtfulness she brought to that story made it clear she was the real deal — someone whose sensitivity and intelligence shaped everything she touched. — Portrait by @dankosteiner
