Hi. We’re starting a label and it’s called Peppermint Future. Follow along here if ya like. We have been hard at work already and we think it reflects a way of doing things that makes sense to the three of us.
There’s a certain kind of sound and spirit that we’re interested in cultivating, and we hear and see it around us here in this delightfully strange little community. It’s a sideways kind of scrappiness, worn in like a nice old glove where the details can’t be well photographed. Dingy sounds that are pretty. Heavy softness and sharp-edged grass that makes us pull up our socks and walk in ways other people—people in other places or other communities—simply don’t. You can hear it if you listen.
We want to engage with it all in ways that reflect that scrappiness. You won’t find us on Spotify, for instance. You know why. Honestly, you do. We will make items you can see and feel and we will see you at the show and at the park and on the sidewalk. We will be here in this digital space too, yes, but in a more limited way. We want to live a real life and think about how to have music and art fit into the life we want to live. Maybe some of that will look a lot like how others (musicians, labels, whatever) do things, but we bet that a lot of it won’t.
So we’ll be tending to every detail of a handful of projects each year until it’s all over. So maybe we can dream a focused dream, holding hands, sauntering into a Peppermint Future.
More soon <3

1.8.24 I am once again a new uncle to sweet little babe Penny Lilac Robertson. Now I got 2 Pennie’s from heaven. That’s my 2 cents about it #jamuary2024
Last May after my Nana passed, our family was cleaning out the house on 815 W Swan. I came upon some old sheet music tucked under her many music lesson books. She had taught piano at that house my entire life and I had spent many hours showing her what I had been learning at home. We had joked as a family that she would turn from a sweet, spoiling grandchildren type of Nana into a stern, correcting finger technique teacher once she sat next to you on the piano bench
I inherited the piano that sat in the upstairs dining room and felt the need to read down some sheet music looking for catharsis. I recorded 4 songs and with the help of my dear friend Drake adding and altering sounds as if they were a passing memory of an immense and expansive world, yet ground in the intimate and cherished moments of her quiet encouragement.
Included in this album is a recording of my Nana in 2016 playing a piece by Cyril Scott titled Lotus Land. She had learned it in college and my Papa would talk about visiting her in the practice rooms after his chemistry lab to listen to her practice it.
These recordings are available on bandcamp and all streaming platforms. Special thanks to Drake for sitting with me and helping transform the sounds so well, John Dawson for mastering, my sister Hannah for helping with the title and liner notes, and Kay for the beautiful album artwork and encouragement throughout the entire process. Thank you for listening to my tribute to my Nana
