👆Another instalment of Mute’s ongoing Tonal Evidence series was released (and given away for free with any purchase) at the Independent Label Market in London last weekend. It’s a wild, mixed bag of random musi(c)k but it’s a label sampler and, I guess, not intended for anyone’s particular tastes.
What did I buy in order to get this for free, you ask?
I bought a new version of a Clock DVA album that I already have multiple copies of.

👆In the year 2000, Pan Sonic, Merzbow, Op:l Bastards, Es, Pita, Scanner, Hecker, Kaffe Matthews, and a bunch of others, all performed at the first ever Avanto festival in Helsinki, and they all contributed a previously unreleased track to this compilation CD.

👆I think i downloaded this from Napster and burned it to CD-R before I found and bought a proper copy. When would that have been? Probably 1999-2000.
It was the fifth one out on Brian Eno’s Obscure label. Devotional music for secular people, someone called it. It’s a marvellous record, with the voice of Robert Wyatt on the John Cage side.

👆Pay no more than £3.50. The Fall played two nights at Acklam Hall (later known as Subterania) in Notting Hill on 11 and 12 December 1980. This tape features the show from the 11th.
It’s The Fall at their most Captain Beefheart-y, perhaps, and features tracks that hadn’t yet been released, such as a mysterious ”?” on the a side, later known as ”An Older Lover etc”.

👆This is not the MZUI that was released by Cherry Red in 1982. No, this is one of the tapes that were made available after each day of MZUI, the audio-visual exhibition staged by Wire members Gilbert and Lewis, and artists Russell Mills, at the Waterloo Gallery in London.
There would likely be tapes like this one from each day of the exhibition, all containing recordings from one specific date. The tape I have here documents what it might have sounded like on 28 August 1981.
I believe these tapes were sold via Rough Trade in very limited numbers. It’s also possible that they were sold at the gallery. I am not sure.
Signed and numbered on the cassette label.
