EXPERIMENTAL ART__Rattling the Archive…. @artlink_magazine 46:1 It was a real pleasure working with guest editor @sasha_grbich on this special / bumper issue which comes as the magazine racks up 45 years in print. The nature of the material here - what’s in, what’s not - is partly a prompt to think about our own archives (personal and public) and an invitation to take stock on many fronts. A big thanks to all the writers and artists involved and to the great people I get to work with at Artlink. We’ll be launching this one on 30 April @fuma_museum in Adelaide. Come along! Cover image: Bridget Currie, Each Surface Touched, (work in progress), 2026. A note on the horse detail: Face Off, 2016. Oil on canvas. From my private studio / archive.

Finally saw a hard copy of Artlink’s The Mother Issue, our Warltati / Summer season; it has been a little slow on the pre-Xmas post but I found a stack @tarrawarrama - one of our regular retailers and one art museum that (still) reliably stocks quality art journals. Mothers and their creative work: so often hidden in plain sight, and an editorial blind spot well spotted by Belinda Howden @belhow — a pleasure to see this one come to life, with my savvy @artlink_magazine colleagues including Tabatha Forbes @drtabathaforbes , special thanks always to @jasmineargent and a posse of dedicated (& multitasking) writers. Sweet Seasons to you all ... @tlousmith thanks again for your rocking cover image!

Patrick Mung Mung: a lyrical painting show @niagaragalleries until 20 Dec. Get a close look if you can - photos fail the delicacy of his ochres and the dazzle of yellow, blue & green. A Gija artist-star Patrick is among the eldest of his generation working @warmunart - and relatively long in the saddle as a painter too - but each work has a freshness and curiosity that is rare to see/feel.

I’ve been on the road so took a while to catch up with my paper version of Narrative + Painting: a month into autumn and the end of the dahlias, but plenty of good reading @artlink_magazine —and enough to send me back to the studio. Thanks @deidrepainter for The Between (2022) cover image and to @belhow @drtabathaforbes for all the good work! Biggest thanks to our writers….who will always need painters.

Jogja day-something: where are we? John & Sam Cruthers @16albermarleprojectspace with Rilka Oakley @bluemountainsculturalcentre trying to plot us on the bamboo topography of @jokoawi at @redbase_art Joko Avianto’s ‘Embodied perceptions of Objects’ a highlight, and fine example of ecological art. Another favourite was @takusno - a few horse moments / details from his wide-ranging multimedia ‘Fever Dreams’ @kohesi.initiatives - I’m looking forward to reading the catalogue! Jogja was an art-blur in all the best ways.

Central Java crossing country - memorable evening performance & informal lectures/ conversations to wind up big days on the ‘art bus’ … in Solo, we were hosted by the legendary Melati @suryodarmomelati & partner Hilam; @studioplesungan they mentor & collaborate with a new generation of performance artists, building rigour and professionalism into the artistic journey. Near Magelang we were treated to a beautiful mindful & humorous performance by Agnes @reading_centhini in the home she shares with husband @popoktriwahyudi living the life of ‘village artists’ connected to the rich threads of local/ regional contemporary artworlds. The works like so much we’ve seen contain important Indonesian history lessons — like Australia, unfinished business impacting lives today, but showing how vital art is in revealing these stories. Both households cooked delicious traditional meals for us, with distinct variations on spicy and ginger teas and soups. Sorry no food pics on my posts! There would be too many!!! But hospitality has been ⭐️ 🌟 ⭐️ 🌟 🌟 @16albermarleprojectspace @project11foundation

Fabulous welcome by Tisna Sanjaya @tisnasanjaya and his entourage in Bandung - I first learned about his extended social practice in Elly Kent’s Artists and the People: Ideologies & art in Indonesia; the sense of collective energy and intergenerational involvement was a joy to see/feel. The previous night @rohprojects in Jakarta we caught Nadya Jiwa’s reflective, ambiguously sensual paintings - Tisna’s daughter. “An attempt to create a conversation about essence”, curated by @alia.swastika @nadyajiwa doesn’t care for social media according to her dad and the catalogue essay - all the more space for ‘slow painting’. Early days on the Australian Indonesia Art Study Tour and I’m again grateful for Elly’s editorial expertise (with Aaron & Wulan) when we did the Indonesia Focus @artlink_magazine in 2023. It’s a starting point only, but you gotta start somewhere! @16albermarleprojectspace @project11foundation @elly.kent

@djirnamade studio in Ubud visit lastnight as part of ‘John & Kabo’s Indonesian Art Study Tour — it will be a hard act to follow over the next 8 days… you can see Made Djirma’s work in Ebb and Flow - contemporary Indonesian sculpture from the Konfir Kabo collection @artgalleryofballarat until 22 September. Regional art galleries doing the heavy lifting! Most of us were ‘recruited’ for this trip one way or another by John Cruthers & his work @16albermarleprojectspace
