We are #UMNProud of master’s student Jeffrey Hu and undergraduate computer science majors Anhao Li and Yehor Zharikhin who have qualified for the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) World Finals, which will take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, this November. PhD student Walter Sands, is integrating virtual reality (VR) observational tools with robotics to facilitate collaborative work between humans and robots. Using VR headsets that allow the user to see their real-world environment alongside graphics, Sands is developing the ability for the user to simultaneously see what a robot sees in order to foster collaboration. #CSpotlight: Sofia Kirsanova Sofia shares that she chose UMN because of her advisor, Associate Professor Yao-Yi Chiang. She shares that she really likes what he’s doing and the directions their lab, the Knowledge Computing Lab, is going. We are #UMNProud of the three Ph.D. students working with CS&E professors who have been named Doctoral Dissertation Fellows for the 2026-27 school year. The Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship is a highly competitive fellowship that gives the University’s most accomplished Ph.D. candidates an opportunity to devote full-time effort to an outstanding research project by providing time to finalize and write a dissertation during the fellowship year. The award includes a stipend of $25,000, tuition for up to 14 thesis credits each semester, and subsidized health insurance through the Graduate Assistant Health Plan. Associate Professor Junaed Sattar is the lead investigator on a project examining an invasive mystery snail species in Minnesota lakes. The $200K project is funded by the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund (ENRTF) and is a collaboration with the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center (MAISRC) within the University of Minnesota’s College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS).
