Inspired by Kamba stories and shaped through materials like acrylic, sisal rope, photo transfers, and stitched yarn, his work blurs the line between painting, sculpture, and installation, inviting reflection, healing, and renewal.

Finals week had us on the edge… so we stepped into the absurd.🤪
UMMA Playhouse turned reality sideways, nothing followed the rules, animals were stuffed, cows were comfort 🐮, and vegetables had a full-on soundscape 🎵. The Fidget Zone rewired something in us (not sure what, not asking questions).✨
It didn’t make sense. It wasn’t supposed to.
But it hit exactly when we needed it.
Reality can wait... until next time! 🌀

“American Sampler: Activating the Archive” looks back to a period when protest reshaped the nation. Curated by MacArthur Fellow Julie Ault in collaboration with the University of Michigan’s Labadie Collection of political dissent, this exhibition transforms UMMA’s towering Vertical Gallery into a living record of activism.

An afternoon of film, conversation, and collective reflection at UMMA. Centered on protest and resistance, this Winter 2026 series brought powerful stories to the screen, and even more powerful dialogue to the room.
From "19" (2005), "Sir! No Sir!" (2005), to "Passin’ It On" (1993), each screening invited us to think deeper about history, activism, and the voices that shape it.
We closed out each screening with a talk-back featuring directors Galileha Calvario-Zavala, David Zeiger, and John Valadez, moderated by Colin Gunckel. Creating space to connect, question, and reflect together.
