Experience “Tusukane” by multidisciplinary artist Kaloki Nyamai on view at UMMA through Spring 2026. Nyamai’s large-scale mixed media work is rooted in identity, memory, and spirituality. Inspired by Kamba stories and shaped through materials like acrylic, sisal rope, photo transfers, and stitched yarn, his work blurs the line between painting, sculpture, and installation, inviting reflection, healing, and renewal. Discover it all, visit UMMA today! ✨

We’re excited to expand UMMA’s Gallery Educator Program, extending its impact through a new course with the University of Michigan Marsal Family School of Education (@umicheducation ). By building on this model, we’re creating more opportunities for hands-on, student-centered learning in the galleries. Read more below, with the link in bio!

Finals week had us on the edge… so we stepped into the absurd.🤪 UMMA Playhouse turned reality sideways, nothing followed the rules, animals were stuffed, cows were comfort 🐮, and vegetables had a full-on soundscape 🎵. The Fidget Zone rewired something in us (not sure what, not asking questions).✨ It didn’t make sense. It wasn’t supposed to. But it hit exactly when we needed it. Reality can wait... until next time! 🌀

The Art, Language, and Legacy of Protest. “American Sampler: Activating the Archive” looks back to a period when protest reshaped the nation. Curated by MacArthur Fellow Julie Ault in collaboration with the University of Michigan’s Labadie Collection of political dissent, this exhibition transforms UMMA’s towering Vertical Gallery into a living record of activism. An afternoon of film, conversation, and collective reflection at UMMA. Centered on protest and resistance, this Winter 2026 series brought powerful stories to the screen, and even more powerful dialogue to the room. From "19" (2005), "Sir! No Sir!" (2005), to "Passin’ It On" (1993), each screening invited us to think deeper about history, activism, and the voices that shape it. We closed out each screening with a talk-back featuring directors Galileha Calvario-Zavala, David Zeiger, and John Valadez, moderated by Colin Gunckel. Creating space to connect, question, and reflect together. Thank you to everyone who joined us, stayed curious, and showed up for the conversation. ✨

A defining commitment to Asian art and a legacy that will shape its future at UMMA. Through a transformative gift, Dr. William C. Weese is ensuring this work not only continues, but grows. The establishment of an endowed curator of Asian art strengthens scholarship, expands access, and deepens engagement for generations to come. This is more than a gift, it’s a lasting investment in the stories we share and the communities we serve. Read more about the impact of this legacy, link in bio!
