But all this aside, I just need to put it out there how much The Comet has meant to people like myself for decades and decades by now. So many places have come and gone since the 90's while it's remained a stable constant.
Not only that, but also a remarkably rare counterexample to the negative clichés of bar culture. Comet hasn't been a place where fucked up predatory behavior is permitted, even if it's a paying customer (unlike so many bars everywhere) it's not been a place where business profit takes priority over a person's safety or tendency towards dangerous levels of intoxication. It's no secret I've never been very comfortable in bar environments, but for real this is one of the good ones, and I don't say so lightly.
Since the early 00's I've seen it host all manner of music, art, and community. It's definitely tolerated some wild antics at times, and been a reliable gathering spot for many niche subcultures.
Today got me reflecting because it turns out Dave Cunningham, Comet's owner, died yesterday. We were doing the 4th residency episode and I had no idea why so many Comet staff and alumni were upstairs on this Tuesday night. Didn't hear the news until after the show, otherwise would've had something to say about it in the basement no doubt.
I didn't really know Dave well, but I've known his venue for a quarter century, and know it has effected thousands (likely millions) of lives for the better. He was a true asset and treasure to the Northside neighborhood, and this is a sad end of era we are unexpectedly experiencing.
So I encourage us all to spend some time reflecting on all the memories, all the impact on #Cincinnati and out into the world internationally. Be kind and compassionate toward Comet's staff, present and past. Let's make certain Dave's place in Cincinnati lives on indefinitely through The Comet and everyone visiting it.
