Abandoned lowrider rescue episode 20! I know what you’re thinking, it’s been a while! And yes the car is now back with the owner @umeracle but I can’t leave you without finishing the story can I? So after cleaning with @miledeepuk products I noticed the power steering leak I was worried about had got worse, and after further inspection it became apparent that the coupler between wheel and box was shot to bits and causing the input shaft to rag around its seal. After a chat with Umer the decision was made to replace both the box and the coupler, problem solved! There was a few other issues to fix, like the thermostat housing which kept leaking (turns out one bolt hole was cross threaded), but that’s now fixed too. Built in East LA in the 90s by Klique Car Club member Frank Alvarez, this 79 T-Bird turned up in a field in England, imported sometime in the early 2000’s possibly by a well known car collector who had a reputation for mistreating dope whips. Luckily it was rescued by a well regarded member of the lowrider community @umeracle who opted to send it to Lay’N’Play for gentle recommissioning… and here it is having had stacks of work done, with help and input from more members of the community and companies who support what we do, @mr_whitewalls @miledeepuk and @street.juice Lowriders mean so much more than just cruising and hitting switches, especially when there’s a bunch of history that deserves higher regard. Abandoned lowrider rescue episode 17! - first up, shoutout to Ernest who commented on the last vid and pointed out that the old coil under setup might have issues if we upgrade the switches to allow some side-to-side movement, and having spoken to @umeracle (the owner) he agreed we should upgrade to coil-over, luckily I keep stock of parts that included powerballs and deep rear cups, and after a few hours fabricating everything went together fairly well, in fact I’m stoked with how it came out once painted! Add to that I got the hoses fully run, the sway bar bushings landed in super quick time so that’s been fitted too. Abandoned lowrider rescue episode 4 - today was a final inspection before confirming the expected works required with the customer @umeracle we wanted to make sure Saturday wasn’t just a fluke, make sure it ran sweet, check fluids, and the big one, see if it engages gears when selected, which were stoked to say it did, and how about that bonus headlight flip at the end?! 👀 tomorrow the real work starts, stripping off what we feel needs fitter work, mainly brakes, suspension!and steering so parts can be ordered. LOWRIDER NIGHT CONFIRMED! The humble G-Body, 40 years ago these would have been as common on US streets as a Ford Fiesta here in the UK, but even more so, as four Manufacturers under the same General Motors Umbrella had their own version, a ‘one chassis fits all’ solution to reducing cost that birthed Chevrolets Monte Carlo, Buicks Regal, Pontiacs Grand Prix and in @umeracle case, the Oldsmobile Cutlass. That chassis came with double wishbone front suspension and a four link rear end from the factory, it was almost as if GM considered Lowriders as a potential market (can you imagine that conversation had it actually happened!) fast forward to 2025 and the G-Body has become a Lowriding cultural icon, possibly second favourite to early Impalas as the lowrider of choice, but also because they make great Hoppers too!
