Join Dynamic as we welcome Jake to teach our last workshop of the semester! WHEN: Wednesday, May 6 | 8-10 p.m. WHERE: Rever Rehearsal Studio, Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center Jake began dancing at 12 in Philly at I AM PHRESH, then attended CAPA High School as dance captain. He danced with Capital Funk in college, becoming captain his senior year, and later performed in LA for award shows, commercials, and music videos with Clear Talent Group. Now in DC, he dances for fun with friends. Jake creates a fun and safe environment for dancers to express themselves. Expect to be challenged a bit and grow as a dancer and person! #umdynamic

Returning to RTF, this time as a judge… Dynamic’s former director, Shakeela! Shakeela Nyakoojo is a choreographer and University of Maryland alum whose work spans performance, creative direction, and dance education. She previously served as Director of Dynamic Dance Team, where she led coordination and creative direction for Rip the Floor Dance Competition as well as choreographed original competition and exhibition sets for the team.  Following her directorship, she served as the lead choreographer for recording artist Rakiyah’s The Cosmic Love Odyssey performance. Her performance credits also include the Washington Wizards pre halftime show with Dynamic.  In addition to her creative work, she has choreographed original competition pieces for Prelude, Revolution Talent Competition,PG’s Best Dance Crew and more. She has also taught for workshop series such as the N2 X Series and Major Definition’s Workshops, among others. #umdynamic

Next up on our judging panel is… Gabby David! Gabby J David is a professional dancer, teacher, choreographer and social media personality signed to Go2 Talent Agency and Selter Media. Gabby has been training in dance for 24 years, she is trained in ballet, jazz, modern, contemporary, lyrical, hip hop, street jazz, Bollywood, shuffling, cutting shapes, house, and more. She trained with a full scholarship at CityDance Conservatory as well as their professional company. Gabby began touring at age 13 as an assistant on West Coast Dance Explosion where she was mentored by Ricky Palomino. She went on to work for Artist Simply Human as an Assistant training and mentoring under some of the industry’s best like Lisette Bustamante, Talia Favia, Misty Copeland, Dee Caspary, Braham Logan Crane, Desmond Richardson and many more! She began a professional career in dancing with credits including things like commercials for Snyders Pretzels, DSW Shoes, Under Armor, Bang Energy, Polaroid, Ellie Activewear, and more! She was in multiple music videos for artists such as Don Diablo, Audien, Tiesto, Kryoman, and more. She was featured in the reality tv show Raising Asia as well as Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition. Gabby then began a career as a teacher and choreographer. Her choreography credits include Fortnite, Epic Games, Don Diablo, Echostage, EDCLV, Electric Zoo Music Festival, Audien, Snyders Pretzels, Polaroid, Bang Energy, Tiesto, and more. She is a teacher at four different dance studios right now teaching things like technique, turns and leaps, contemporary, jazz funk, and shuffling! She has been traveling the country with multiple in house conventions teaching and spreading her knowledge and love for dance. She is also the director and founder of a dance company performing at the largest venue in the United States; Echostage. Gabby’s approach to dance, choreography, and teaching is unique and refreshing and heavily focuses on making the environment a safe and fun place for all.  #umdynamic

Introducing our first Rip The Floor judge, Minilik! Originally from Maryland, Minilik is a dancer, choreographer, and teacher. He has been dancing for 10 years now and started his journey in the DMV community. Currently, Minilik lives in Los Angeles and works as a professional dancer along with teaching choreography classes at multiple studios. Minilik strives to keep the balance between working hard and having fun in his classes. His style of choreography is influenced mostly by club and street styles of dance, along with social dance and touches of his life experience. #umdynamic

Our final competition team you won’t want to miss… it’s Major Definition! Currently celebrating their 20 year anniversary, ‘Major Definition’ is a competitive dance crew based at UMBC. They aim to promote an awareness of street dance culture through competitions, performances, and workshops within UMBC and the regional community. This is all with the intention to build confidence, leadership, and team unity within their dancers. Major Def encourages students of the dance community to pursue and further develop their talents both in individual and group choreography, freestyle, and performance. Major Def is more than just a competition dance team; they are a family that strives to promote the culture that has touched each and every one of us as dancers. Introducing our first RTF competition team… Motion Dance Team! Founded in 2023, MOTION’s purpose is to explore various aspects of dances that emerged from black culture. This includes hip-hop, step, and majorette which will be subdivisions of dance on the team. With a focus on learning and refining skills related to dance, MOTION encourages others to explore their own expression of dance. MOTION is committed to exploration, growth, and learning. Through the exploration of various foundational aspects of Hip-Hop, MOTION hopes to encourage members of our team to explore areas of dance they may have not tried before and work on improving and expanding their dance style.
