Discover the Faculty of Arts at Summer Camp 2026! This two-day, in-person camp is exclusively for Manitoba high school students who are completing Grade 11 in June 2026. Think critically about cultures, societies and ideas while learning about all the Faculty of Arts has to offer. Meet professors, take part in activities and engage with fellow students wanting to examine, evaluate and challenge ideas across many academic disciplines. These aren’t the typical university lectures! Sessions will be comprised of activities and exercises where you can immerse yourself in the challenge of learning something new. Topics include: • What is a Bachelor of Arts degree? What careers are open to BA graduates? • Storytelling as a window to examine understudied histories, lived experiences and resistance to oppression • Game theory as an introduction to economics • How to identify and date artifacts from an archaeology dig • Understand internal thoughts and feelings and their impact on behaviours through the practice of clinical psychology • Gen Alpha slang–where does it come from and what does it mean linguistically? • Life is unfair-can you build the ‘most’ ethical society? • How does government distribute limited resources in times of emergency? • Go back in time through the writing of the ancient Greeks (see genuine papyrus from Egypt!) • Create a zine with a theme (What’s a zine? Come to camp to find out) • Complete a language passport as you learn how language and cultural studies can lead to exciting travel study and work opportunities around the world The Faculty of Arts at the University of Manitoba offers over 40 areas of study. With so much choice, it can seem overwhelming when deciding what courses to take. Attend our summer camp to get an inside look to help guide you over the next year as you consider what to study in university. The camp is free, lunch and snacks are provided and registration is required. Camp dates: Tuesday, June 23 and Wednesday, June 24, 2026 8:30am–4:30pm Location: University of Manitoba Fort Garry Campus Deadline to register: Tuesday, June 16 Learn more and register at umanitoba.ca/arts/summercamp2026 Please share!

Film Studies teaches students how to create films and historically and critically studies films that embody different forms: popular, experimental, documentary, animation and more. Film is a major art form of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and much of what we know about our modern world comes from film or its related media – video and television. One of the best ways to understand the world and better prepare ourselves to cope with its complexities is through the study of film. The program also offers film production courses such as direction, screenwriting, cinematography and editing. Do you love storytelling? Have movies or shows that made a lasting impact on you? Would you like to tap into your creative side? Film Studies might be your kind of program. Throw Back Thursday: Hungary travel-study course! Last summer, German and Slavic Studies and Philosophy student Wiliam Evans-Murphy completed the Hungarian Culture and Language Course. William and his peers spent three weeks in Hungary, splitting their time between Budapest and Szeged exploring Hungarian culture, history, art, life, society and language. One moment truly struck a chord with him: “On the first day of the travel course, whilst sitting on a bench inside the Central Market Hall in Budapest, I asked Dr. Árvay, our professor, about the posters I saw throughout the city that referenced the war in Ukraine and the subsequent refugees and asked what they meant. She shared it had been a central political topic over the past few years given that Hungary borders Ukraine. We continued to talk about the war, and I absentmindedly retrieved a phrase I had read from a chapter of her book that said - “Hungary, the bulwark of the west.” She looked at me and said, “it is not a joke.” From that moment on, I realized that I was no longer just reading history and political affairs from the pages of a book or a screen, I was living it. Having lived so far removed from the European history I have spent my life studying and admiring, the stories remained stories, and it wasn’t until that moment that I really woke up and looked from the pages of the history book onto reality.” William highly encourages students to consider travel-study: “Understanding different cultures, customs, languages and lived experiences is one of the best ways for us to combat the evils that grow around the globe.” The Hungary travel course is offered every other year. In 2026, Arts students will travel to Germany and Poland to take courses – wishing them safe travels and an unforgettable experience. Check back here for highlights from those two trips throughout the summer. Learn more about German and Slavic travel study courses by searching “Study Abroad” at umanitoba.ca #StartAtArts #umanitoba
