What does flight leave in its wake?
A couple of weeks ago the ‘pehla vimaan’ or ‘first flight’ landed on the site that is to become the Navi Mumbai International Airport. The first flight is a milestone that carries symbolic value in the course of the project. It draws from maritime traditions, where a ship’s maiden voyage is a test of its seaworthiness and a celebrated new beginning. However, for the airport, this symbolism shifts from the craft to the port, underscoring the site’s readiness to handle flights. Realising flight on the site signifies a conquest over the land itself - its culture, complexities and myriad challenges. The first flight event, complete with dignitaries and live commentary, seemed less like a true test run and more like a staged spectacle.
The image of the first flight is one of many around the airport currently indulging in a celebratory development rhetoric that forgets or relishes the rapid changes in land use and drastic reformation of the social and ecological makeup of the site in the airport’s long lead up as much as the potential for fiasco or even outright disaster that has been realised in other infrastructure projects too often recently. These celebratory images compelled a revisit of other images that have been left behind in the airport's protracted gestation period. The dusty renders reveal intention, aspiration, dreams, unfulfilled promises, fabulation, spam and things that never can quite be, but nonetheless emerge as triggers toward the urbanisation of the city’s periphery.

Titled 'Tensions', this is the fifth in a series of six texts Alana is undertaking as @carriageworks inaugural Writer in Residence. The texts open a network of ideas expanding from the bodies of work 'All the violence within this' and 'In the national interest' exhibited as part of The National.
The first four texts were interesting as, I encourage you to check them out at Carriagework's journal. You can find the link for this one in the bio.
