VOODOO
I started making this the day D’Angelo passed. Having just returned from New Orleans, I thought Voodoo seemed a fitting theme to run with. Upon doing my research into Voodoo rituals and culture, it didn’t take long to find inspiration. Zangbeto are traditional Voodoo guardians of the night acting as spiritual police and protectors of the community. Appearing as large, spinning cone-shaped costumes made of grass or raffia, they are believed to be inhabited by spirits that protect against evil and enforce laws.
As usual, what started as a small project quickly ballooned into something more.
It was such a pleasure to figure out and design every aspect of the scene. From the designs on the characters’ clothes, to the little scratches and details in the textures, even down to directing exactly how and when each electric strike hits. That is the joy of creation for me. You could tell an AI to do all that for you, but it will never make decisions the same way you would have if you tried it on your own.
One love to all suffering and oppressed people

from the archives: BANNED vape ad
This was one of the first few freelance gigs I had hawked off Craigslist at the beginning of my career.
The client DID NOT film the actress painted green. It was part of my role to make her green, which 10 years ago (pre roto-brush) meant I had to mask around all her jewelry frame by frame. Took me weeks and paid like $500.
At least I have this timeless portfolio piece
{I don’t condone nicotine use. Don’t do it kids, it’ll ruin your life}

this was an experiment in combining mocap data, cloners, and soft bodies in #cinema4d
It’d be fun to try to this again, with more clones, and some sort of trigger that can automatically change the actors mocap input when collided.

Yellow mushroom
I built out a more extensive environment for this one, and tried to max out how many strings I could stick to everything

an experiment in fungal transformation
I really enjoy layering as many simulations on top of each other as possible, in a never-ending attempt to honor the infinite and mesmerizing complexity of nature.
I have a statue of a mushroom on my balcony. I think the birds have come to see it as an altar, or beacon. A sign that peace and a good meal are close by.
I pieced together some sound fx and put “Timeless” by John Abercrombie {<<highly recommend} in reverse. In the future I’d like to start making and collecting my own foley; get even closer to the work.
