The Sailor, the Cigarette, and the Candle
An old superstition says that every time someone lights a cigarette from a candle, a sailor dies. Seafaring superstitions often have a basis in reality, and this is no exception. When sailors didn't receive their wages on a ship, when they were forced to spend their time ashore, usually during the winter, and thus without income, many sailors supplemented their earnings by selling matches. So, anyone who lit their cigarette from a candle instead of a match was robbing a sailor of his earnings. They were robbing him of his livelihood, or, to put it more dramatically, bringing him to the brink of death.
