It’s been a tough couple of weeks at the hospital; even though I love what I do and it’s such an honor to play for and with the kiddos, it can still be hard work, emotional work. When people ask how I am, I’ve been saying in my microcosm, things really are okay. But in the macro, the world is just hard and things can be frightening. So today before teaching I took some time to play. For little Alli. Thanks for the clothes and accessories and Alli doll @yalldolledup 💚💛 P.S. Can’t wait to share with y’all my Tiny Desk Contest submission for this year😁 #barbiedoll #ukulele #playistheworkofchildhood

On dark days, I wear bright colors. On my darkest days, I wear my brightest colors. “I cannot stop to strut, in a world where bells toll. Perhaps you laugh at me. Perhaps the whole United States are laughing at me too! I can’t stop for that! My business is to love. I found a bird, this morning, down—down—on a little bush at the foot of the garden, and “wherefore sing,” I said, “since nobody hears?” One sob in the throat, one flutter of my bosom—“My business is to sing”—and away she rose!” Apologies to Ms. Dickinson, for I will stop to strut on occasion. But it is also my business to love. And it is my business to sing. Even when no one hears. Dress is from @julyliebe

Experienced a divine night of music by Jazz Houston. I first heard Sarah Vaughan as a teenager and fell in love. So smooth, so musical, so thoughtful, so versatile, so intentional. It’s the kind of musician I wanted to be and still am striving to be. I’ll never hear The Divine One Ms. Vaughan live, but hearing Diane Reeves and her trio felt like I was pretty damn close. Been a while since music brought tears to my eyes, but I openly cried at the prayer that was their rendition of Tenderly. Also had the pleasure of hearing Ekep Nkwelle with the Jazz Houston Orchestra. Just a soul-filling night. I’m curious: what music makes you cry?

Put on a “Sunday clothes” outfit today cause all my bras are dirty, and remembered this short piece I wrote back in January. —There are no sidewalks on the long Louisiana country road. Hwy 378, also called Theriot Road. I walk along this road every Sunday morning, every Sunday evening, and every Wednesday night. To First Baptist Church Moss Bluff. It’s a short walk and I like walking. Can’t drive yet anyway, and maybe wouldn’t want to. We used to laugh ‘bout my little sister Ashley kickin’ a dead armadillo (or was it a possum?) off of this same road on one of her walks home from church. One of many tall tales from my short family. Much like the terrifying GOD I went to learn about, serve, and worship. Every Sunday. Now I sleep in every Sunday morning. Now I eat a huge breakfast every Sunday morning. About the time I might have been singing hymns. Now I have sex…well, most Sunday mornings. A lil’ bit different time. Now. —written by Alli Villines, January 2024 —dress: @trashydiva

Hi, I’m Alli & I make music. Simple as that. Daily. But today, June 21 is Make Music Day! And these are some of the places I’ll be making music, as well as at the hospital and it’s opening night for Tamarie’s Texas Toast of which I am music director! So it’s a big #makemusicday I hope you’ll join me in making music today!

I know this #billieeilish quote is more about your art inspiring others to create, but I wanted to explore and highlight how your art can morph and inspire you to create more AND how creating takes time/is a SLOW process for many, myself included. So, yes, my lullaby album, next to quiet, is definitely intended to provide a possible soundtrack to your rest, and I would be over the moon if it accompanied your dreams, and dang, if it inspired anyone to make a new thing, that would be a beautiful cherry on top. But at the moment, I’m still so proud that like the end of the clip says, I “just got it out there” at all. #music #ukulele #artsinmedicine #lullaby #album #albumart #singer #spotify #ukulalli
