A historic and deeply meaningful moment for the Hellenic and Orthodox Christian community unfolded in San Francisco this spring, as Greeceās elite Presidential Guardāthe Evzonesāmade their first-ever appearance in the city.
Throughout their stay, the Evzones connected deeply with the Greek American and Orthodox community through a series of educational presentations held across Northern California. Beginning with the San Francisco Metropolis at the Annunciation Cathedral in San Francisco and continuing to several parish communities in Sacramento, Belmont, and San Jose, these sessions were offered free of charge and welcomed more than 1,200 children and community members.

The Evzones ā Greeceās Ceremonial Presidential Guard ā march in a Greek Independence Day parade in downtown San Francisco on April 19, 2026. Following the precession, an offical ceremony was held in Union Square to commemorate over two centuries of Greek Independence, and to honor the Evzones historic first visit to California.

The EVZONESā Greeceās Ceremonial Presidential Guard ā visit San Francisco City Hall for an official welcome ceremony and reception on Wednesday April 15, 2026.
Marking the first time the Evzones have ever traveled to San Francisco, the ceremony was a stark reaffirmation of the connection between the Greek diaspora not only in San Francisco, but around the world, to their native homeland.
Dignitaries including SF Mayor Daniel Lurie, former Greek-American SF mayor Art Agnos, Metropolitan Gerasimos, Greek Consul General to San Francisco Grigorios Tassiopoulos, and others joined to mark this momentous occassion.
