We hope can join us for a release in your area. The UFFCA is working with Upper Fraser First Nations and partners to rebuild already vulnerable and endangered salmon populations that were further impacted by the Big Bar Landslide. Please note: Dates are subject to change based environmental/fish health conditions.

Yesterday (May 19) approx. 8500 Chinook salmon fry were successfully released into the Willow River. The release was part of emergency conservation enhancement efforts in the Upper Fraser to protect and rebuild endangered and vulnerable salmon populations, which have been additionally impacted by the Big Bar Landslide. These juvenile salmon are the progeny of brood (parent) stock collected during the 2021 Big Bar emergency enhancement program to help recover several Chinook and sockeye populations. They were reared at the Quesnel River Research Center hatchery. Emergency conservation enhancement fry releases are planned throughout the spring, summer, and fall in natal streams throughout the Upper Fraser watershed.

Attention fish harvesters: DFO, in partnership with First Nations and the Province of BC, is tagging Chinook, sockeye, and coho salmon with radio tracking transmitters. Information from this program will help improve our understanding of Big Bar impacts and salmon migration biology. If you find a tag, please report the number, with date and location of capture or recovery, to [email protected] — or turn it in with catch info to your local catch monitoring program. Transmitters are attached to the back below the dorsal fin, or inserted into the stomach cavity (see poster). Numbers on the transmitters uniquely identify salmon and their migration behaviour. Thank you!

Eggs/fry were incubated and reared at the Quesnel River Research Centre (QRRC) hatchery at the University of Northern British Columbia to increase their chances of survival. The release was a joint effort between the UFFCA, the Tsilhqot'in National Government Fisheries Department, QRRC, and the Fisheries and Oceans Canada Salmonid Enhancement Program (SEP). 📸: TNG Fisheries.
